Oh what a plot!! Enjoyable and amazing!! Loved getting to know the gang better and the plot twist wasn't one I was expecting !! So glad I have the 4th book because that ending man!!
It was quite entertaining! It was much better than the last one but I just want to throw the book out the window when Laurel just refuses to make a decision and when she does she never sticks with it!
I'm curious as to how all of this is going to wrap up with the next book!
How about you guys? Are you on Team Tamani or Team David?
I'm on TEAM TAMANI!!!!

The characters annoyed me and I thaught the plot was stupid. I hate to be such a hater but I totally hated this book lol! I gave up and am not even sad about it! I liked the first book and then it all started going downhill for me. I wouldnt recommend this book to anyone.
This is one of those books that I think I waited too long to read. I loved the first two books in this series, but I spent about half of this one trying to play mental catch up. Not sure I'll pick up number four.
You can find this review and many others on my blog, The Reader's Antidote
Did I call it or did I call it? That's all I'm going to say about the triangle in this upper part, so if you want to check out my review of Spells, you'll know what I mean...
This series has gotten progressively better. I went to a signing with Aprilynne Pike a few days ago and she said that she's been waiting the whole series to write this book, and you could tell. Much more action, a lot more mystery and intrigue, and so many more times where I wanted to hit one of the characters. Especially David and Tamani. Boys *rolls eyes*. I liked the addition of the new character, Yuki, as well as appearances of old ones. I'll be interested to see where this is all going in the nest one, but it's so far away from now :( As a side note, she said the final one takes place an hour after the end of Illusions, so get pumped!! Btw, Aprilynne is like one of the sweetest authors alive! :D
**SPOILERS!!**
Can you guess what I'm going to start with? The only part that really matters: the Laurel-Tamani-David love fest. Well I can't say I was disappointed. Thank the gods Laurel couldn't fight her attraction towards Tamani for long, and I am SO Team Tamani. I mean honestly, David is an annoying little science geek that started liking Laurel in sophomore year of high school. And Tamani-mmm sweet, sexy, brooding Tamani-has been watching over her for her whole life. He even went to specific training so he could be her (complicated Gaelic that I can't remember, but it means: ) Guardian. He's loved her since before she even knew about him and he'd die for her. David says he'd do the same, but somehow I kind of doubt he knows the true meaning of those words. I mentioned up at the top that I called it, and I did. I bet you Tamani and Laurel will be together (of course) and Chelsea will make a move on David and they'll be together. It's the perfect solution, I just hope that's what Pike chooses otherwise I will be extremely pissed!! Anywho, we shall see I suppose.
One part that annoyed me was how close Tamani was getting to Yuki. I mean, at the end, it's obvious they're not going to be together (she's an unbound Winter faerie, gasp!), but still the whole time I felt like he was deliberately leading her on for his own gain instead of trying to get information from her. I cringed every time he touched, and when they kissed, I got as angry as Laurel would have. But as long as he still loves Laurel, I won't beat him up. On the note of Yuki, I can't believe Klea is a faerie!! At least, I think that's what Pike was alluding to. And what kind I wonder. I mean, Yuki is Winter, what if Klea is just as powerful? Such a cliffhanger with this part!
I don't wanna wait for the last one :( But if I must, I must. *sigh*

Since Laurel chose to stay in the human world after securing the property where the gate to Avalon lays hidden, Tamani is around full-time - as a fellow member of Laurel's high school. (Insert love triangle drama here.) There's also a mysterious girl put in their path courtesy of Klea, a girl they suspect might be a fairy. Laurel brushes up on her fall fairy "Mixing" skills and starts becoming a more competent heroine.
Characterization:
Getting better. Like I mentioned in my review for Spells, Laurel has a tendency to be irritating. In Illusions, I found myself wondering why David and Tamani are this obsessed over her. While none of the characters are particularly round and dynamic, Laurel always fell flat for me. Pike seems to be on the verge of exploring her deeper emotions and conflicts, such as college vs Avalon, but then pulls away at the last minute. Laurel thinks, "Should I go to college or keep doing fairy stuff?" It doesn't get a lot deeper than that. She asks the question, but doesn't plunge ahead the way a regular person would when making a decision, so she stays flat in the reader's mind. She's not especially strong or brave, being constantly rescued or shielded by one of the two boys in the triangle, or one of the sentries, or Klea. Every time she mentions David looking at her with sad eyes, or Tamani looking at her intensely, I had to shake my head because as a heroine, she's not all that special.
Plot:
Much better than Spells. The introduction of Yuki as a character and mystery was a welcome change from focusing on trolls and love triangles. Yuki also presented the opportunity for Tamani to flirt, Laurel to get jealous, and Laurel to do some self-examination in the heart department. The third book ended with a twist, which is always nice, and got me excited for the last installment.
Other:
This doesn't fall anywhere, but as with Spells, I don't get the title!!! Illusions are known to be summer fairy magic, and the book has nothing to do with any of that! I hate it when titles don't make sense. It makes me feel like I'm missing something. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
All in all, a solid 3 star book. I'm glad I was finally able to get it from the library. I've been on the waiting list since May when the book released! Book 4, Destined, comes out in May 2012 and I'll be excited to see how the series ends.

Nothing happened in this book!!!!!!
This was mainly about Tamani coming in and making Laurel question her choices (David, living in the human world, etc.). I must say that I don't like Tamani. Or really Laurel for that matter. But beside that there was too much leading up to the main event and then nothing happened.
Though I did like how the narration shifted back and forth between Laurel and Tamani. I would be more interested to read the next book in Tamani's voice. Maybe then I would see the attraction Laurel has for him.

3.75, I liked Illusions much more than Spells
It was okay.
I definitely enjoyed the first two books more than this one, but it had to have a bit more to move the story along.
