I have seen the movie a couple of times since it came out in 2008 and I loved it. I’ve been postponing reading the book for quite a while. I've finally decided to read it recently so I borrow it from the library.
Considering the fact that the last time ’I've seen the movie was more than a year ago I don’t really remember all the details or the names.
RMT: I liked the sound of the name Jamal more than Ram Mohammad Thomas. However, I believe that the latter has much more depth given the fact that it incorporates more religions and at the same time it incorporates none.
Salim: I loved Salim in the book – he was a good friend, had dreams and was determined to fulfil them. The movie made his character too dramatic and made a jerk out of him. I hated him in the movie.
Nita: Whereas the movie was basically a romance story, the book had almost no romance at all. I didn’t believe the romance between Ram and Nita, it appeared too shallow. I loved the romance in the movie, although I could’ve lived without it.
Ending: The end of the book was a bit bleak in my opinion.
Movie vs. Book: I can’t really say which one I liked more or which one is better because the book and the movie are two separate entities and the movie is actually just loosely based on the book.
My rating: 4/5

I wish I had read this before seeing the movie. Just a lovely book all around.
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the way it was written and structured. The only thing I didn't love was the ending, I felt like it was very anitclimatic when it all came to a conclusion after the last question. The twist at the end should've been built up more, maybe given hints along the way since her character was such a small part up until the final pages. But up until that point I was very involved with the book, and now I will let myslef see the movie! Highly recommend this book to almost anyone!
I was nervous about reading this book. I really enjoyed the movie (so assumed the book would be OK), but was worried about being bored having seen the movie a number of times. I was pleasantly surprised :) Although the main "feel" and characters are the same, the stories were quite different in parts from the movie. I found the book to also be more realistic in its portrayel of the main character (I always thought that he was a bit too 'pure' in the movie considering all he'd been through). So the book gets many thumbs up from me!
Tried the audiobook. Too depressing for me and the timeline was hard to follow. DNF.

Though not particularly well written and slightly homophobic, I do think this will be an interesting text for my Film Adaptation course--how does one go from an average novel with an interesting idea to a film that won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay? In this case by adding a ton of new elements and cutting ninety percent of the plot. It turns out to be a good choice, since much of what Swarup wrote tends to the melodramatic and overly obvious.
I didn't hate the book, I was just underwhelmed. And for such an innovative and energetic movie to come from this source material? Well that's something!
