The thing about Elin Hilderbran novels is that they are predictible. Friend goes missing but she's pregnant and has something to share...when you find out who the man in her life is, you really feel like rolling your eyes since you'd figured that a while ago. BUT, if like Nantucket, family drama and good beach reads, this book will not disappoint.

One of my favorite Elin Hilderbrand novels of all time. I don't know why I waited so long to pick up her books. This is an amazing story. She does so well developing the characters and making it feel like you are right there with them.
Disappointed. Quick and untidy wrap up at the end. Also, if Kayla, Val, and Antoinette were "friends", I'd hate to see how they treat people they aren't friends with... A miss for Hilderbrand. The only bonus? It was a quick read...
This book was engrossing, but that’s about the only good thing I have to say about it. The “friendships” that were the focus of the book were pathetic, the love affair between Theo and Antoinette disgusting and rooted in pedophilia, and the characters almost entirely unlikeable. Kayla was embarrassingly insecure and pathetic, Antoinette was completely unrealistic, and Valerie was nothing but cold hearted and self-absorbed. Theo was a spoiled jerk, and Kayla and Raoul absolutely mishandled everything in their parenting of him. Also, the idea of the night swimmers group being so scandalizing in the newspapers made no sense. The horror of skinny dipping and drinking champagne! And there was next to no resolution at the end of the book. Kayla agreeing to not tell Theo that Antoinette was alive and having their baby at Antoinette’s wish was unethical and nonsensical. Antoinette practically destroyed her life; why would Kayla ever stand by her and continue to preserve her son’s heartache?
I did love the section towards the end when Theo lived with his grandmother in Boston. The grandmother was a wonderful character, and I loved the descriptions of autumn in her apartment and her life revolving around shopping for and cooking a marvelous dinner. I aspire to have that kind of life, and I loved her ideas of a female god. As with all Hilderbrand books, even in the case of several flawed plot lines and characters, there will be moments of beauty.

Eh...it was a quick read, but I didn’t love it. I didn’t love the women, I didn’t love the story, and it was easy to put this book down.
To be fair, I know what to expect from Hilderbrand as I’ve read almost all of her books. I know it isn’t going to inspire any soul-searching, but this left me just feeling kind of blah. There was so much that I read and thought, “wait, WHAT?!” For instance, your daughter’s name is Cassidy B.? Is the B really necessary? It was annoying to read the mother actually refer to her daughter as Cassidy B. I tried to find a reason why a daughter would be named that, and I couldn’t. That’s just one of the many “But whys?” I experienced.
The setting of Nantucket helped. That’s really all I liked. And I finished thanking my lucky stars I have the friends I do after reading about this “friendship.”
