Felt like there were too many time gaps, especially closer to the end of the book.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is a Kindle ebook that I began reading in late July, since the next review book on my docket is miles away from me at my dad's house and I wanted to skim through this book before my boyfriend receives a Bluray copy of the film version.

The mix of real and faux, book-universe pop culture references are a little offputting, as the insta-wisecrack, self-depreciating speech, but John Green has made a really accurate attempt of depicting lives lived with cancer, both with Augustus & Hazel, their families, and medical caregivers. In the time that I've been with my boyfriend while he's had Hodgkin's lymphoma, I've suffered from the lapses of sappyness that Augustus' parents has, the positivist celebratory days that Hazel's mom has, and broken down over moments of bravery and nihilism that he has, like Hazel's dad tends to do. Most of all, I empathize with Hazel's frustration and dismay that she has toward her physical limitations and how the outside world sees and reacts to her and Augustus' cancer. While my boyfriend sees the tumors and nodules that dot his lymphatic system as being separate, deviant, thoughtless entities, it resonated with me deeply when Augustus said that his cancer is part of him and that fighting it is like fighting a civil war; similarly, loving my boyfriend for who he is is easy, metabolically active or inactive nodules and all.

Age rating:

13+, deals with topics younger children may not understand and there are mentions of death and some brief barely descriptive sexual scenes that fade to black.

Book rating:

I know that this is a work of fiction but could it be any more real? I wanna cry this book made me cry. It’s packed full of emotions from pain to joy to love it captures all of it perfectly. This book brings truth with every word and I couldn’t be more thankful for it’s existence. It’s a masterpiece.

This book had me clinging to the edge of my seat I just had to keep reading. I never thought a book that touched on cancer could become one of my favorites but it is.

Character reviews

SPOILER WARNING

Augustus Waters - "You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful."

I’m starting off with my personal favorite character ✨Gus✨. He like Hazel is going through cancer, a different type but cancer nonetheless, but he doesn’t let that get to him. You see Gus doesn’t always look at the positive side but he isn’t always pointing out the negative in things he just says things how he sees it and that’s a,axing. He is deeply metaphoric and all around amazing. His death had me sobbing like a waterfall cause he actually made me feel something.

10/5 BEST. CHARACTER. EVER.

Hazel Grace Lancaster - “As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

Hazel. I have no words. She is all a main character should be not delicate but not overly strong. She seems human like any good character should. She feels pain like normal people feel pain, she sees life through an unfiltered lense and that makes her pure.

9/10 No one can beat Gus.

Final verdict:

Emotional depth: 10/10
Humor in humorous areas: 10/10
Romance: 10/10
Likeliness to make you cry: 10/10

This book was metaphoric and true. Throughout the whole thing I had to remind myself that this was a work of fiction that Hazel wasn’t real that Gus wasn’t real that none of them were real, cause it felt oh so real.

This book is officially my favorite book, and as I return it to my library I can’t help but think what would’ve happened if this were real.

Believe me when I say I'm a sucker for YA books. So, why didn't I like this book, I wonder. I have heard rave reviews about this book and yet I didn't pick it up until yesterday. It was lying in my bookshelf for long. Maybe, I had high expectations about this one. And it proved that it is definitely not a 'A walk to remember' or 'Love story'. Or maybe, just maybe, I have seen cancer upfront and close and I felt that the book was making a mockery out of the dreadful disease. All in all, it was just passable and Meh :/
P. S: Great writing though!
