Orenstein interviewed high schoolers and college men to get an idea of what modern young men are facing in the way of dating culture. In talking to them, she found that while things have advanced for young women in the last few decades, that that is not the case for young men. There is still a pervasive idea of “boys club,” that is reinforced through peer pressure and media influences. There is still the view of sex as conquests for boys, and that they must “hit that” in order to prove themselves. Modern boys are also subjected to much more porn than previous generations, and that is having an affect on them as well. But young men still want to have meaningful relationships (sexual or otherwise), but they don’t know how to communicate this with others. Orenstein recommends that the best thing parents can do for their sons is have open dialogs with them about friendships and relationships in order to help them understand what healthy relationships look like, as well as ideas of consent and communication.
An excellent and interesting look at modern young men’s views on sex and dating. Gave me lots to think about.

If you want a mostly cisgender and heterosexual take on boys and young adult males and sex, it is good for that. But much like Girls and Sex, more could be done.
I really appreciated this look into the socialization of the male sex. However, this book obsesses over the gender binary and centers heterosexual cisgendered white men. Those that don’t fall into that mold are largely relegated to two select chapters that attempt to encapsulate the unique experiences those that are not white, cisgendered or heterosexual in broad strokes. I appreciate Orenstein’s attempt to analyze the flaws in the way men are socialized in the United States but I think this needed to be far more inclusive if it wants to paint an accurate picture.

This book is really really good. Does a great job of tying research with individual stories. Everyone should read this book.
I really wish every could read this book. I’m a guy and never knew about consent in detail like this. America seriously is a disappointment when it comes to sex education. It’s not just about abstinence and avoiding disease. It’s more complex. Hopefully this can bring more awareness and hopefully hope for other countries too. Just know if your a guy try to avoid porn and media way of seeing women. Focus on how they feel and make it mutual and don’t jump into conclusion that she wants to take it further. Or else it will cause unaware crime.
- Didn't enlighten me as much as Girls and Sex did, is it because I am older and have a different setting -> different perspective? I think I'm harder to please
- Have been reflecting on the ideas about porn that this book introduced me to. Disturbed!
