Another extremely important book that everyone needs to read. Not only does she highlight the need for comprehensive sex ed, but also communication skills, empathy, respect for self and others, social awareness, and appreciation of the diversity of sexual expression and orientation. I especially like how she doesn't just stop with consent. Consent should just be the bare minimum (and she make it a point to detail that consent should be explicit, enthusiastic, ongoing, and able to be withdrawn at any time). Making sure sex is both ethical and good are also important and building emotionally healthy relationships built on foundations of mutual respect and trust is more important than getting rid of the "v-card".

A must-read for parents of boys.
Some eye opening stuff in here about relationships beyond sex, that I just wouldn't have thought of.
Will definitely read again when Mr7 is older, to refresh my memory, but also, conversations need to start now.

I will never truly pass with cis-men, and I think that is OK

**Please note that in quoting and discussing aspects of toxic masculinity with her interviewees, Orenstein uses and prints in their entirety several homophobic and sexist slurs.

Orenstein's two books on adolescent/young adult sex, sexuality, and how kids are trying to navigate society should be required reading for educators and parents. Split broadly by gendered experience, her insights are valuable and her reporting is excellent.
