I liked this one, but I don't think I liked it as much as I was really hoping to, since I really enjoy Holly Black's work.

The main cons of this book were that it had a very slow start and was difficult to engage with due to the "past" sections carving up any action that happened. The other is the ending cliffhanger
(I hate amnesia tropes)
. But realistically both of these things are typically found in the first book of a series.

There is a lot of potential for action and romance in the next book, so I'll probably pick it up when it comes out. Probably.

Very interesting story including shadow magic which is a more uncommon trope for me - refreshing!

The shadow magic was explained poorly and I disliked the main character too much so it was a struggle! If it weren’t for Vince I would have given up….2 stars for a creative concept but it just fell flat for me

Actual rating 3.75. I’m not quite sure how to feel about this book. I almost DNFed it multiple times but decided to stick it through. This world was a bit hard to understand and the lore and world building just seems off. I did really enjoy the last half of the book but I really don’t know how I feel about that ending. Especially the last page. I think the ending felt a little rushed honestly.

2.75* Second half was better than the first, although the twist was fairly predictable. I think that the hints throughout were too obvious, perhaps stemming from the author's history with writing YA before this adult novel. A lot of telling, not showing as well.
I am interested in the sequel, however.
