In ihrer Biografie erzählt Jennette McCurdy von ihrem traumatischen Leben als ehemaliger Kinderstar und von ihrer krankhaften Beziehung zu ihrer Mutter und zu ihrem eigenen Körper.

Ich bin ein bisschen jünger als McCurdy und war damit genau in der Zielgruppe der Kinderserie "iCarly". Niemals hätte ich hinter der quirrligen Sam eine Schauspielerin vermutet, der es so schlecht ging. Das Buch ist keine einfache Lektüre, McCurdy lässt auch sehr private Details nicht aus.
McCurdy nimmt im Verlaufe ihres Buches die Perspektive von sich als Kind, als Teenager und als junge Erwachsene ein. Persönlich hätte ich ihre Geschichte lieber komplett aus einer reflektierten Erwachsenenperspektive. So konnte ich den immer wiederkehrenden Gedanken nicht loswerden, dass sie unmöglich Ereignisse und Konversationen, die viele Jahre her sind, so detailliert erinnert, wodurch sich das Buch doch nicht ganz authentisch angefühlt hat.
Abgesehen vom Schreibstil (der mit einigen Fluchwörtern ausgeschmückt ist) ist die Biografie vor allem inhaltlich sicherlich nicht jedermanns Sache. Das Buch beinhaltet diverse sehr schwere, aber auch wichtige Themen, die mich noch eine Weile beschäftigen werden.

No rating because it's a memoir
I will say I don't understand why this is marketed as 'funny.' Yes, there's humor, but it wasn't funny in a haha way. And that's not a criticism because I didn't expect it to be funny. I just find it odd that people who blurbed it acted as though it was a funny romp to read or something. It kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
As a kid who grew up watching ICARLY and also had a horrible mom, I was very intrigued to read this. I think a lot of people who had abusive mothers will relate to it. It doesn't show much of Jeannette's journey finding happiness or stability. It mainly focuses on her upbringing and rocky years, and towards the end we just scratch the surface of the way she feels about her mom today. I wish that had been talked about a bit more, but maybe it wasn't because she wrote the book around that time and still had more processing to do. Overall, I'm glad to hear she prioritized her health and joy and quit acting, and now hopefully she can find those things in writing or whatever else she pursues. After all that, she definitely deserves it.

This book was heavy as fuck and a lot to take in, especially hearing her narrate it for the audiobook, but I have to admit that her Miranda impression was so spot on that it made me laugh out loud every time 😭

I’m not giving this a super high rating because it was such a sad story overall that it hurt to read. That said, the pacing was fascinating and the storytelling was really well done!
