This book has the bones of a great story, but a lot of it felt a little surface level. I wish there had been a deeper dive into the characters and their motivations.

This was a really cool ya fantasy, with a world inspired by medieval Europe during the black death. The mystery that drives the plot was really interesting, though I'm a little iffy on how it wraps up. The mc Cas has the ability to see and speak to ghosts, and I wish it was used more in the story. It was never fully explained, and with a plot focused on who is killing those closest to the queen, I thought we'd see Cas' power in action more, but it didn't, really.

I enjoyed this book. It’s a linear plot and I read it quickly.  Not an overly complex plot but sometimes that’s just what you what. It has what I like in a YA fantasy, what I would consider a romp, good action with a couple twists and slow burn romance.

It’s somewhat gory so if that turns you off keep that in mind.

It's a satisfying fast paced read with good characters. It was compelling enough to stay up for. Plague is part of the story so you might expect this to be really dark but it came across more as melancholy but not in a depressing way. There is somehow a hopeful centre to it all that felt genuine and not naive. It's good! You should read it :)

I loved this book so much! It's an overall well-crafted story with characters that feel real, and with a very cozy atmosphere despite the horrible things that happened in the past and the new danger in the present. While I can think of possible additions that could have made the book perfect (like perhaps a few pages more with the main antagonist), I feel so emotionally connected with this story that I don't care.
