It was okay, but it really picked up at the end <3 once the narrative got to the present. I ended up liking Ren and Toby, flawed as they were. I really want to read the next book now...!

Several Goodreads posts said this could be read as a standalone novel even though it's the second part of a trilogy. I don't agree because the book just ends mid-scene, which was disappointing. I was hoping to get some closure in the last pages because by that time I was not really committed anymore to reading another book in the series. Unfortunately, it turns out there was no closure to be found after 400+ pages.
Even though there was some very good writing in this book, the world building did not convince me and even annoyed me at times because it was so repetitive. The sermons by Adam One were boring (I started skipping them towards the end), ditto for the hymns. So, even though I would like to know what happens next to Toby and Ren, I won't pick up [b:MaddAddam|17262203|MaddAddam (MaddAddam, #3)|Margaret Atwood|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1366394020l/17262203._SX50_.jpg|17613051] to find out.

Get the audio book - amazing version with the religious sect's sermons acted out and hymns sung. Really comes to life.

Another incredibly disturbing installment in a series that scares the shit out of me. (Literally - I thought that some of the more graphic scenes in the novel were making me feel sick, but it turned out I just had food poisoning.)

I have similar opinions on this one as I do Oryx and Crake. It loses points for those annoying-ass God's Gardener hymns (they are just extremely not good), but it gains those points back for having women protagonists with deep interiority. Again, trigger warnings for everything, and again, the way sexuality is portrayed is very ominous and disturbing, in a way that I'm not sure reflects reality outside the context of someone who's suffered severe trauma. Also quite heteronormative. That said, again, a very good book from a narrative standpoint, and an interesting look at the rest of the world that was introduced in Oryx and Crake.
