the part where the mother woke up made me cry. doesn’t wake up to her house becoming a hotel but the second she hears a child being sick.

This one was wonderful! We meet up with Moomins again, this time they are hibernating during the winter, but Moomintroll wakes up and cannot go back to sleep, so he is exploring the winter wonderland, seeing a blizzard for the first time in his life and has to take care of a bunch of visitors passing through because of the cold and snow.

It's a really charming little book and it's certainly a huge upgrade compared to how depressing the November one was.

Childhood memories, can see myself reading this to my grandchildren some day in the FAAAAAAR future. Loved to read it in Finnish winter!

Different. Familiar. Melancholy.

Story: Moomins hibernate in the winter, in their nice, warm cozy home. But one night Moomintroll wakes up and can't get back to sleep. He can't get out the doors or windows, because they are blocked with snow, but he does manage to get out through a hatch in the attic. Moomintroll then explores the winter wonderland outside and meets and spends the winter with an assortment of characters.

Characters: Our loveable Moomintroll is not so full of love in this story. He's mostly either overwhelmed or melancholic. Other characters avoid him, take advantage of him or leave without saying a word of thanks or goodbye. But Moomintroll is the only Moomin in 95% of the story so we get to see his true character. Little Myy and Too-ticky make appearances, along with other big and small characters.

Language: This book is filled with the usual Moomin logic and sense, whimsy and fantasy, with some winter grey and cold mixed in. There are songs and footnotes and a classic Moomin tone overall.

A bit darker than the other books, so not my favorite, but still a good classic Moomin tale.

It’s an annual tradition to read Moomintroll Midwinter out loud to my kids as the winter solstice approaches. We all agree that it’s our favorite Moomin book—they’re all great, we just like this one best. The boys are old enough to read it to themselves, of course, but I think they still like that I read it to them. It’ll be a sad day when we don’t spend a week or so reading it at night... I suspect and hope that I’ll get a chance to read it to them long after they’re “too old”.
