Trigger warnings: lying, betrayal, trauma, abandonment, therapy, injuries

This is my favorite book of the series so far! I have learned recently that I love "marriage in crisis" as a trope. There's something so beautiful and honest about admitting that marriage as a "happily ever after" is kind of unattainable. Sometimes people can love each other fiercely and still be hurting each other, but want to make it better. This book does all of that. Freya and Aiden were introduced in book 1, the latter more than the former and I immediately became interested to know more about them. Their love story is so cute and playful, but we find them in distance and coldness here. I really loved the way anxiety was portrayed; it was eerily similar to the ways it manifests within me so I connected a lot with Aiden and his desire to mitigate struggle and strife in anticipation. Like him, for me, sometimes it also causes more problems than it solves, but it was so heartening to see Freya hope and love him through those concerns and issues. I wish I would've been a little more clueless to the reveal at the end, because I peeped it right away, but I don't think it took away from the raw emotion of it which is great. I loved their re-connection at the end and how they reaffirmed their love. Such a good installment!

A solid second chance romance regarding an established couple!

This installment focuses on the oldest Bergman, Freya. She and her husband Aidan are on the outs, not because of some specific event but a gradual buildup of internal pressure and non communication that has resulted in a slow slide of disengagement. When Freya has had enough of being ignored, she and Aidan are forced to dig deep into their psyches for mutual understanding and problem solving.

I won’t bore you with the ins and outs of their issues and how they solve them. Just know again, that I’m impressed with how Liese unfolds her romances. Both Freya and Aidan have very valid issues, and despite them being an established couple, I felt their hurts and fears, as well as the UST and longing.

Small niggles revolved around a short lived 3rd act “breakup” and this being a bit long for my impatient self. Points for the anxiety rep, for remaining nicely smexy, and not overly devolving into sappiness like the previous installments did.

Know that I don’t go for, or avoid, second chance romances either way. However, this was a standout one for mostly being grounded in reality, for the great character development and growth, for showing the painful trials that ensue when a marriage is on the rocks. Every emotion and action/reaction between Freya and Aidan was spot on and rang true, and in order for them to have a triumphant success story here, they know they have to work at it, that they have to choose each other every day. I had no problem cheering them onto their second go at a happy ever after!

this is the best one yet, i really like that she tried something new with the romance genre and the third act conflict actually made sense
