What an utterly insane and brilliant book this is. I read Wolfe's 'Soldier of the Mist' last year, and this was a different, but equally unsettling and enthralling reading experience. Wolfe pitches you headfirst into the story, into this strange and alien, yet at times hauntingly familiar, ancient future-Urth, without explaining or describing things from without, only allowing the reader to see the world from within, through Severian's eyes.
It's not always an easy read - at times I had to let it rest because the prose is so rich it gets almost overwhelming - but it's also a book that crept beneath my skin, into my thoughts, and into my dreams. Haunting, would be the word I'd pick if I only picked one to describe 'Shadow & Claw'.
I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

Universet som handlingen foregår i er så fascinerende og unikt at man ikke kan unngå å bli sugd inn i det. Gradvis og elegant blir litt og litt avslørt om verdenen kalt 'Urth.' Det er en sjangerblanding mellom fantasy og science fiction. Den får ikke full pott på grunn av dårlig kvinnesyn. Allikevel er det på langt nært så ille som i mange andre fantasy-bøker (Heisann George R.R Martin!) Dessuten gikk jeg inn med en forventning om å lese fantasy fra 1980-tallet og ikke et feministisk manifest.
There's a lot here and I think I'd need to reread it to fully appreciate it. I love the dying earth fantasy setting though, I wish more books/media would explore that space.

Rambling, incoherent plot makes for low stakes. Worldbuilding is purely additive, to the point where nothing feels like it connects. There are some reveals that maybe we’re meant to be impactful, but they didn’t advance my understanding of the world.
The notion of a high-technology world that has decayed back to the middle ages is neat, but it’s not enough to sustain something so long. The main character makes much of his eidetic memory, but I don’t really understand how memory plays in as a theme here. This was written in the 80s, and it feels like a throwback to an earlier form of sci-fi, and in fact, ancient epics, where emotions are recorded as a series of announcements that person X has emotion Y now. The story is not interested in constructing a coherent, continuous internal state.
This story is also pretty shit on gender. That might be appropriate for the society, but it’s still unpleasant to read some dude’s rape fantasies. Combine this with weak characterization in general and it just feels like this story is an excuse to write a series of dark vignettes about a cool sword and a brooding guy who feels a little bad but mostly proud about torture, and also likes having sex with women who can’t really say no. Yaaaaaay.

با اینکه شاگرد رسته شکنجه‌گران بود ولی وقتی اون سگ درمانده (تریسکل) رو دید پنهانی آوردش و تیمارش کرد. کتابخانه بزرگ رسته کتابداران هم جالب بود که موش‌ها در میانشون لانه کرده بودند و استاد Ultan که سرپرست رسته بود و چشم‌هاش دیگه قادر به دیدن نبود و به طرز واضحی خود خوزه لوییس بورخس بود که در تاریکی اون زیرزمین در کنار شاگرد و جانشینش cyby زندگی می‌کرد.
نمی‌توانستم در حین خواندن بخش‌های مربوط به دکتر تالوس به بازیگری به نام کریستوف والتز فکر نکنم که مطمئنا بهترین گزینه برای بازی این شخصیت است.
مرد سبزی که از آینده آمده بود و میگفت که انسان‌‌ها در آینده با ترکیب کلروفیل گیاهان در سلول‌های خود موفق شده‌اند فتوسنتز کنند و تا حد زیادی از نیاز به مواد غذایی رها شوند.
سوریان و یوناس، notule را دیدند که موجودات سیاهی بودند همچون یک پارچه که به دنبال گرمای حیات موجودات می‌رفتند و با چنگ انداختن بر آنها به درون منفذهای بدنشان می‌رفتند و راه خود را تا شش‌های فرد ادامه می‌دادند.
روستای معدن‌کاران سالتوس، غاری که موجودات میمون‌مانند در آن بودند و نور کانسیلییتور انها را فراری داد. آگیا که میخواست سوریان را بکشد.
یوناس که در آنتچمبرز کاخ ابسولوت با ماشینی به سیاره خودش برگشت تا تعمیر شود (او در هنگام عبور از دیوار شهر سیتادل به سوریان پیوست و با او همراه شد. میخواست با یولنتا باشد). غولی که در کناره رود بود و میگفت سوریان باید با او برود تا تاج پادشاهی‌اش را بازپس بگیرد. دکتر تالوس که یولنتا را زد و خفاشی که خونش را مکید و در خرابه‌های شهر سنگی به نظر می‌رسد که مرد. هیلدگرین که در خرابه‌های شهر سنگی به همراه جادوگر پیر (مارمولک‌مانند) و شاگردش در زمان سفر کردند تا یکی را بدزدند که در میان رقاصان زردپوش گرزبدست بود.
