A hard boiled noir fever dream about Jewish identity set in an alternate timeline.
I wanted to like it, but just couldn't get into it. This was my second try with the audio book.

In a way a love letter to now almost gone Yiddish Ashkenazi culture
I wanted to really like this...I didn't like having to use the glossary in the back (I was halfway through the book before realizing there was a glossary in the back) to look up the meaning of all the yiddish words. It was kind of meandering and convoluted. Most of the time I was just trying to keep the jist of it going.

It took me over a month and a half to finally finish this book. At first I literally read it to go to sleep, it would put me to bed within the first couple pages. The writing can be incredibly dense while saying very little which is stupid and exhausting. But the idea of the book kept me coming back, as did the murdered would-be messiah, as did the handful of lines that hit so incredibly hard. By the end I was thoroughly invested in the murder mystery itself. This review represents extremely positive and negative emotions, putting it squarely in the middle.
