I knew going into this that it would be a bit different than Rollin's other stuff. And, indeed it is. Vampires, werewolves, and blood sacrifices... so many books (and movies) of this genre. It's just getting tired and old. Although the writing was good, the story did become a little convoluted... and unoriginal. After reading nearly half the novel I simply lost interest. I suppose I ought to stick to the Sigma series. Moving on.

This book was great! I am a huge fan of James Rollins he is a master at pacing and suspense and his characters are always able to draw you in and make you root for them. This book was masterfully mixed with a little bit of gothic fantasy twist but still kept all the historical action that Rollins is usually known for. I literally devoured this whole book in less than two days. I mean who needs sleep when you have such a great story. The story didn't fully end and was left open for a 2nd book; I can't wait to read it.

While this book was full of archetypical characters and a mix of the thriller/supernatural/historical mystery genres, it was an engaging and fun read. It doesn't pretend to be highbrow literature and I didn't pretend to be looking for it when I picked it up. I will definitely be reading the next one.

Book #72 Read in 2014
The Blood Gospel by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell

This book was sort of a merge between The DaVinci Code and The Strain. It was action-packed and had short chapters, along with an army of bad vampires and an order of vampires that are a sort of religious order. This is the first in a series and while almost 500 pages long, was an amazingly quick read. The main characters are Rhun (a "good" vampire), Erin (an archaeologist) and Jordan, a soldier. They are given the task of finding a book called The Blood Gospel, believed to be written in the blood of Jesus. Of course the bad guys all want the book too.

This book was well-written and kept me engaged. The characters were interesting and complex. I will continue on with the series.
