Great read. If you want to learn about Mexican culture, this is the book for you. It will help you understand the ties with our families, the clash of cultures that an American-born, first-generation person faces, and much of the family dynamic. It will also help you understand what it's like to be a poor and poorly-educated minority in the United States. Read this book!

Couldn't finish it... It didn't catch my attention enough even after passing mid book.

All I did while reading this book is cry. The author writes with simplicity that still conveys and makes you feel the raw emotions of the characters. I enjoyed how all of the characters are fleshed out, with their own hopes, dreams, and struggles- her mom, dad, jaunga, Lorena, her other family members too. I connected to every character and I felt for them, I cried for Julia like I was her. A big part of that is I did see a lot of similarities between me and her when I was a teenager, despite leading very different lives. It’s a gift when a storyteller is able to make you feel and connect with people who are very different than you. I love the themes and the message of this book, and I would recommend it to EVERYONE!
