fredrik blackman manages to capture the beauty and brokenness of being human in this story. it’s a book about hockey in a small town but it’s not. it’s about the choices we make as individuals, the stories those choices stem from and the ones they leave in their wake. it’s about darkness and pain and injustice, but it’s more about family and loyalty and love. it shows us we are all flawed, biased, selfish, for different reasons at different times, but it shows us that deep down, if we have the courage to look, we may find we have the strength to do what is good and what is right despite all that stands against us. chock full of tears and laughter. my favorite novel.

This book has some very heavy topics but I think this was one of the best ways I've ever saw them handled. I'm usually extremely wary because often the way people write about them is just.... not good at all because they use them as shock factor and clearly never talked to anyone who went through those things but the way it was written here was very real and in a sensible way. There are entire pages you could quote and want to push them into people's faces so maybe they finally start understanding that the way they think and react is fucked up.
Definitely felt the urge to strangle plenty of characters so many times as it was intended and my heart was breaking for some of the kids and my heart was also breaking for the parents who just wanted to protect their children. The parent-children relationships really messed me up damn.

(Also I'm sooo relieved that my library has the sequel available to read rn so I don't have to wait dbhdbh)

Fredrik Backman does it again! His writing hooks you from the beginning and through the use of short chapters and multiple character perspectives is able to respectfully delve into the small town reality of handling really horrible situations.

I found this really difficult to read at first as it jumps from different characters very quickly trying to introduce everyone but it got easier as the book went on.
