Jennifer Weiner

3.55 AVERAGE

I got about halfway through and just couldn’t continue - the teen/mother dynamic was a little too painful to read. Not badly written, just not right for me right now!

I really enjoy Weiner's books. I read Good In Bed, so many years ago that this sequel was really almost a new introduction to the characters. I enjoyed getting to know them 10+ years later. I was completely shook up by something that happens toward the end of the book. Not yet sure how I feel about it yet.

The ending was unexpected, but I thought this book was great. Cannie is a protective mother and her daughter is learning about her moms past and honestly the wit and sarcasm in this book is just as or more hilarious than the first. I enjoyed the book

TW: sudden death - god damn rocked me and I don’t see the point of killing that character off

Generally, this was a little bit of a disappointment. While there were certainly funny moments, and a few relatable bits, mostly I had trouble liking the two main characters. Candace Shapiro lost all of her spark and gusto and became an annoying, overbearing helicopter mom. I found Joy, her daughter, to be irritating and spoiled for most of the book. One of the characters I liked the most met with an unexpected and disjointed fate. In the end, the book seemed to pull itself together into a relatively pleasing, real-life ending that I did enjoy, but overall this was a let-down of a book for me.

Not as good as Good in Bed, but still a fun read. But Jennifer, why did you have to end it that way?

I liked the book a lot, and got sucked in by the characters. Sometimes I wanted to yell at them and say "just tell the truth to each other for once!" But I wanted to follow their story. This book had another tragic twist, which I don't understand. Can't this character get a break? There didn't seem to be any point to it, and seemed to be chosen from a wheel of "choose your plot twist." The rest of the story was great, though.

I loved Good in Bed. I thought the main character was smart and funny. Fast forward to this book and she lost everything I loved about her. She became needy and whiny. I hated her daughter. Really I hated every character except the husband and he dies half way through. I stopped reading after that part. Don't bother reading this book. Just read (or re-read) Good in Bed instead.

I liked it!
