Elizabeth Kostova is extraordinary. I have loved each of her books, and The Shadow Land is no exception. Her characters are beautifully written, and the mixture of Bulgaria's past and present brought incredible depth to each chapter.

This was a fantastic tale! Although at nearly 500 pages, I think I should get credit for reading at least 3 books ;)
This was engrossing and beautifully written. I don't know how I got through a 479 page book except with this, I couldn't stop thinking about it! Every spare minute was spent reading and trying to find out what happens.

Slow and steady. Bought it 6.5 years ago; set aside and shared with someone else because male protagonist is gay, but this does not feature largely in the plot aside from keep him and Alexandra as travel companions rather than lovers. Otherwise clean, though attraction is somewhat interesting . . . I like the setting in post-WWII Bulgaria.
I wish I had loved this as much as I do The Historian, another novel by this author. Yet, as much potential as this novel had in the beginning, I feel that it fell short of its potential. Instead, what happened in nearly 500 pages, could have easily happened in half that with less running around.
Alexandra comes to Bulgaria to teach and at the entrance of a hotel she runs into a family who leaves behind a bag. Taking it upon herself, especially when she finds that there is an urn filled with ashes in the bag, Alexandra seeks out the family to return their property. Along the way she is assisted by a taxi driver, Bobby, who helps her drive all across Bulgaria in order to find the owners of the urn. Honestly, it was a little cheesy buddy road trip story and then a dog was added in which made it just even more so. I thought there would be a greater mystery too, though I unfortunately figured out the plot twist about halfway through. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved that there was no romantic interest between Bobby and Alexandra, but I also hated that it had to come through one of them being gay in order to kibosh the heteronormative. I just felt like all of the relationships were a little forced, especially considering that all of the events took place within a week. And then all of this leads up to one gigantic climatic scene that takes two seconds to execute into nothingness.
While I had high hopes for this book, I even loved the bit about stray doing being vicious as it so reminded me of being in Romania myself, it still puttered away at the end. If it had been shorter and perhaps got to the purpose of the story quicker, then it would have carried me along better. But the flow of it was just too long and not enough at the same time.

Estructurado en tres libros, "Tierra de Sombras" es una novela que me ha gustado mucho. Muy despacio la autora va desarrollando la trama muy lentamente que puede resultar aburrido pero así es Kostova. Iremos conociendo a Alexandra una joven norteamericana que viaja a Sofia, Bulgaria para dar clases de inglés y dar un cambio en su vida porque -y como ella misma relata-perdió a su hermano Jack en un accidente. Los capítulos se van alternando: Uno es relatado en tercera persona y el otro relatado por Alexandra donde nos cuneta todo lo que le pasó antes de que ella decidiera dar un cambio en su vida yéndose a vivir al extranjero. Pero no sólo ella nos va relatando su vida sino que, conforem vamos avanzando en la lectura y pasamos al libro segundo y tercero, otros personajes se sumarán a ésta trama y los iremos conociendo en primera persona.
Y un día, Alexandra toma un taxi y conoce a una pareja de ancianos a los que ayuda a subir a dicho vehículo y accidentalmente, Alexandra se queda con una bolsa. Tal como dice la sinopsis, ésa bolsa contiene cenizas humanas y un nombre: Stoyan Lazarov. Como ella se siente incómoda ante esto y hasta teme que la acusen de robo se acerca hasta una comisaria y pide ayuda. De cierta forma la consigue y tiene que viajar hasta un pueblo llamado Bovech y localizar a la familia de ése nombre y así ella poder volver a su rutina diaria y comenzar a vivir una nueva vida allí en Bulgaría.
Sin embargo Bovech será el primer lugar que recorra de Bulgaría porque las cenizas la obligaran a dar una "serie de paseos" que serán toda una aventura. Pero no está sola. En éste viaje conoceremos a Bbby que a simple vista parece ser un simple taxista, pero no parece ser lo que leemos y poco a poco iremos descubriendo de una manera muy ingeniosa, que él tiene ciertas habilidades y herramientas que son propias de los delincuentes. ¿Y Alexandra no se da cuenta? Es que Bobby hace su trabajo tan bien, es tan simpático que es muy difícil sospechar de él. Y él la llevara hasta dar con la familia de Stoyan. Y ya a medida que vamoss leyendo el segundoy el tercer libro vamos descubriendo quién fue Stoyan: Mucho más que un musico, un hombre con secretos, secretos de la época del Comunismo e iremos conociendo toda la crueldad por la que tuvo que atravesar. Y apareceran otros personajes como Irina que nos irán narrando la historia de Stoyan.
Es una gran novela con un final PRECIOSO pero no le di una nota de 5 porque yo necesitaba más romance y aquí no lo hay. Recomiendo que lean éste libro y si, puede resultar denso, aburrido pero la forma de escribir de Kostova es fluida y no hace que te aburras.
Yo me planteaba muchas preguntas. ¿En dónde desembocba todo? Me hacía posibles hipótesis y NINGUNA acerté. Es que se presentan elementos, acciones que te hacen dudar y te atrapa aún más.

"Las viejas como yo, que viven mucho tiempo, se dedican sobre todo a contar los muertos, nos guste o no".
"Me han quitado cosas: mi estrella, la capacidad de entrar en calor y (lo peor de todo) la claridad de mis recuerdos (...) Había días en que la nieve parecía silenciarme por dentro, y perdía la concentración, me despistaba y pasaba casi toda la tarde sin practicar. Pronto hubo días enteros o incluso semanas de silencio. No podía tocar (...) Sentía, que mientras mi mente no se hundiera, podía permitirme grandes silencios. Estaba tan rendida que ni siquiera podía pensar en mis conciertos, y así me quedé en silencio una temporada. El silencio era blanco como la nieve: una página intacta(...)"
