A really powerful and moving book, almost to tears at some points. It was so upsetting and you find yourself wishing that they would be happy just for once. You can’t help but think how unlucky some people are in life, especially Hassan and Sohrab. A book that I will think about for a long time I’m sure.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I am so happy that a humanist narrative has emerged about the people of Afghanistan, and that the story touches on important themes of classism and racism. This book is so well-intentioned, and I love that. At the same time, it's flat. The characters are not believable. It's too clean and too simple. But I am glad people are reading and discussing it.

This book shook me to my core, I went and babbled about it to my friends the minute I finished reading about it. It broke my heart into pieces and then repaired it. It made me see how privileged and lucky I was, and how we tend to forget other's misery. Inshallah, I will read more books from Muslim authors and from war torn countries like Afghanistan which could have been beautiful had it not been for the greed and malice of human beings. It is terrifying how there really are some horrible people like Assef in the world. And how I hated Amir for what he did but maybe who knows, we would have done the same in his place. I love his character development. Hassan is truly too precious and innocent and loyal for this world, I bawled my eyes out at what happened to him. This is an amazingly, deep piece of literature. It is thought-provoking. The plot twist was something else. I love how Amir has his eyes opened and becomes a true Muslim. This was a story of friendship, betrayal, redemption and salvation. It was very knowledgeable too.
I can't wait to read the rest of Khalid Hosseini's works.
