Firstly, excuse me whilst I scrabble about to get hold of the second one in the series!
I have no idea why I’ve dragged my heels to actually read this. I’ve borrowed (and returned it!) from friends probably too many times without even trying it until someone gifted me a copy. Gorgeous prose, dialogue that made me giggle on TFL (a challenge) and say ‘oh fuck’ out loud (maybe less challenging) Also, whilst I think the very few female characters are 2D at times, the narrator is also challenged about how he views them/their agency throughout the story. Still not perfect in that regard, but it’s certainly more than I’ve seen in more ‘classic’ SFF that I’ve read recently.

Fantastic book! Dove me straight in with the colourful world and characters! Only issue was a few meandering in the last third of the book. Excited for the next one!

Well, considering all the great comments on the jacket of this book and those I heard by word of mouth, I expected to be totally blown away by this book. I wasn't. I don't know if I was hoping for too much?

Anyway, the writing is quite good. Really good imagery and metaphors. Quite original in that way. The main character, Qvothe, is interesting but I didn't particularly like him and couldn't relate to his decision-making process. Way too reckless for me. He is definitely too smart for his own good. But, then I thought about Harry Potter. Isn't that how Harry is? Well, I suppose it is. Why I don't mind it in Harry but got frustrated with it with Qvothe, I can't say. I just thought: put Qvote in any situation and he will choose to do the thing that will mess up his life the most. It's very predictable in that way which I find rather boring.

It's quite long. 700+ pages, I think. Which I don't even have a problem with if I'm enjoying the book enough, but it was a relief to me to be done with this one. I think the author over-indulged himself in some things. For example, trying to describe the beauty of some girl seemed to go on for paragraphs. So not necessary. You could get by just by telling us she's exceptionally beautiful, or give us the color of her hair and eyes, or say she has a nice figure, but there's absolutely no need to belabor the point. Maybe the author just needed a more ruthless editor? He was trying to impress a lady friend?

I probably won't read it again (anybody want to buy it off me after that glowing review?). I am saved from reading the sequels. Yea!

It is a pretty original story. The world-building not particularly original. Nothing like Brandon Sanderson (Please read The Way of Kings!). Secondary characters nothing special. I sound so negative. It wasn't terrible. Maybe I'm just frustrated that it's so hard to find a book I adore anymore.
