I hold that no one is doing horror like SGJ. I am wary of even narrowing what he does to “horror” because his stories contain EVERYTHING. This sequel was somehow even more exciting than the first while still maintaining the heart of MHIAC. I am so excited to dive into the final book but already gutted to let Proofrock go.

Randy’s rules about sequels - “So, it’s our job to observe the rules of the sequel. Number one: the body count is always bigger. Number two: the death scenes are always much more elaborate. Carnage candy. And number three: never, ever, under any circumstances, assume the killer is dead.”
Did I expect the sequel to be better than the first? No……well I was wrong!! This book was INCREDIBLE!!
Chainsaw was an intro to Proofrock & its players, Reaper picks up 4 years later and we are thrown straight into the slashing!
I can’t wait to read the final!

I just cannot be bothered to care about anyone in this. Except Letha, who is a badass, and her bumbling deputy husband. Skimmmmmmed from 68% on.
Dull, leaning too much on the previous book without anything compelling.

the sadist in me was giggling and kicking his feet at the array of gory kills in this - and the multiple viewpoints means you get to experience most in the moment rather than the aftermath.
The spread of POV's adds an interesting vibe to the story - it reminded me of another violent small town, Fredrik Backman's 'Beartown', and in a similar way it enhances the humanity of smaller characters while sometimes feeling a tad unfocused in its storytelling.
The core cast is still great, though it is a little funny (and sometimes distracting) how so many characters are now quoting horror movies. Final sentence rules.
