I’d say more like 2.5 stars. It had its moments, and I must say when I got to the end of one chapter I was usually hooked and wanted to read more. But there was a lot of repetition that I think could have been cut in favour of more towards the end of the book. I still enjoyed it overall, and this is yet another reason I wish I could give ratings out of 10, but alas, I cannot.
Meh, it was ok but there was far too much exposition and explanation and far too little action. There is a setup at the end for a possible continuation of the story, I would probably read it but this ios one to get from the library, don't waste the money or book credit to purchase.
*Thank you to the publisher for a chance to read the book in exchange for an honest review*
Two stars for creativity of the premise, that's about the only good thing about this.
The book is about a women who can recognize a murderer by their eyes. Great concept, and I was really excited to dive into this. However, this book was not as exciting as you would think.
As other people mentioned, there's just sooo much explanation in this book. I didn't think of it as a thriller at all but more of a sci-fi mystery with little action. It definitely could have been cut by about 200 pages. I'm glad that the author put in an explanation to the main character's ability, but it was just beaten to death. I would have accepted the explanation about 50 pages before it ended and it was more annoying to read on than anything. We get it.
All of the characters were flat. I didn't care about a single person. And apparently, neither did the main character (Kate). Her brother dies in the beginning and she reacts a little, but when people die later in the book she shows much more emotion than for the person who she grew up with and was supposedly her 'best friend' and she was his 'protector'.
Another thing, the vocabulary in this book SUCKED! If I had to read one more sentence that contained 'avenging angel' or 'bogeymen' again, I would have thrown the book across the room. The ending was horrible. Most likely, there will be a sequel and it will not be on my TBR.
Overall, disappointed. This was my first Goodkind book, I'll try not to judge off of this since I've heard his fantasy writing is great.

The action bits were good, but there were huge chunks of explaining that were very repetitive.
I love how this is a mix between a little bit of fantasy and true crime. It almost seems like whats in this book could happen in real life.
This book started with a very interesting premise - what if some people could evolve the ability to spot the human predators who walk among us? So I was in to follow it through to the end just to see how this would play out. But holy smokes - this is not good writing. The pacing of the book is odd, and the story ends up spending dozens of pages at a time - literally, not figuratively - burying the reader in exposition.
And the plot ends up feeling like it's being written by Trump's campaign team - it's attempting to make the entire world seem like it's falling apart, and technology is ruining everything.
Plus, there are major plot points that are telegraphed for chapters in advance.
Overall, this was a pretty lame book.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I must say when I got the email asking me to read Terry Goodkind’s new book I was pretty excited. I love receiving ARC copies from new and upcoming authors but when you get one from an author you actually know it is exciting! Needless to say I was excited to read this book and see what it was all about, especially since it is a thriller.
I thought this idea behind this book was really unique and creative. The fact that you have a person who has the ability to see killers is just a unique concept that I haven’t read about. It is interesting because there is this person, Jack, that has been studying these people and has all this background information on them that is given to you in the story. I think it was great that Terry had all this backstory to who Kate is and why she is the way she is. Although I must admit when it got back into how it is written into our DNA about being evil I got a little confused with all the information that was thrown in.
I thought it was fun how real world ideas are thrown into this like NORAD was thrown into it and the whole cyber security threat that could happen. I found it interesting saying that the threat in society is not a nuclear threat but a cyber threat that someone could just take out the grid and we would have nothing. Which is totally true like thinking what would we do without power and the internet and everything. It also makes you think that are we really in a nesting period of evil.
I thought the story was well thought out, I liked that you pretty much dived right in and the story continued in a good pace. There were some twists that I wasn’t expecting and I liked that. It was kinda strange that at random times it would go to these really gruesome scenes and then back to just intense thriller moments and then towards the end again switched to like a quick romantic part and then back to how it was. Still even with this I thought it was a good story and was hooked wanting to find out what was going to happen. It does look like there is going to be a second in this series, maybe more, but I am curious as to what is going to happen now with Jack and Kate. You are definitely left on a cliffhanger and wanting more.
I don’t read thrillers as much so when I get the chance to it is a nice break from fantasy and sci-fi. Terry’s series Sword of Truth is a fantasy series and so this seems to be a little different of a book for him as well. I think it is great when authors are able to write in different genres and still deliver a good book. Overall I thought it was a fun read and I thought the characters were well thought out and had nice back stories and you connected with them as you read. I am looking forward to reading the next one when it comes out.

In my experience, fantasy writers are fantasy writers, period. Attempts to cross genres are never successful. So it was with no small amount of trepidation that I picked up a thriller by one of my all-time favorite fantasy writers, but I was certainty not disappointed. It was a fantastic read! I can't say enough for this book that I could hardly bear to put down. There's no magic or fantasy here, but I was happy to see that Goodkind once again did a wonderful job writing a strong female lead, which he always does exceptionally well. I certainly hope that this book will lead to another series, because I can't wait for more!!!
I will add one small warning for anyone considering this book - it is REALLY dark, especially by comparison with what he usually writes. If really grim, dark books aren't your cup of tea, pass on this one. Otherwise, enjoy!

There's a very short list of books I wish I'd never read...this is going on that list.
