Much too explanatory and academic or it would've rated higher.

If you ever wondered what would happen if the largest volcanic eruption in human history happened in modern times, read this. Contains the usual disaster tropes of the government not listening to scientists (where have I heard that one before) and private industry pushing safety limits just to make more money (sounds familiar). A hint of romance thrown in for good measure but don't get too attached to ancillary characters, I can't promise they'll stick around too long.

Death count by the end of book one, perhaps a few tens of thousands, but warm up that calculator because you will be running out of fingers and toes quickly.

Possibly one of the higher death counts from a disaster series I have read. Of course just as deadly as nature is the behaviour of desperate humans.

I really wish the other books were out.

I got 70% of the way through this and just stopped. I should have stopped at book 2. This is one of those series where the author is just phoning it in and I'm done.

I liked the first one a lot better

I loved book 1, I liked book 2, book 3 was a let down for me. Where is the science of the earlier books? This is just more of 1000 other books in the genre. Run, run to the next place, run to the next....

Great story, lots of great scientific information, but lots of inaccurate historical information that’s included that doesn’t even need to be discussed in the first place, and the author seems like a generally bad dude. Misogynistic at the very least. Ashby could be a really cool character if she wasn’t constantly “hugging herself and crying” so Jake can come in to hug her and have a sexist thought monologue. Dialogue is very unnatural as well. I want to like it but at least it’s a quick read.

While I enjoyed the first one, the second book in this series has characters who are downright cartoonish, the trajectory of the violence and how quickly society fell apart, and the clear anti-progressive political messaging drowned out what could otherwise be a fascinating story.
