I really liked this. Smart heroine who makes actually intelligent choices, whose sexuality is not a main point of the novel! Combine that with utterly INSANE world building and a really unique magic system.. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

the writing of this book felt very "internet" i guess and while at times it was funny i didn't go in expecting it which kinda lowered my enjoyment (kind of like a less well written gideon the ninth?). and while the characters were enjoyable and i liked them i didn't feel much inter-character conflict which i would have liked more of. they all kind of immediately decided to do what is good and join up even though they were on opposite sides minutes before. but i will have to say that the world was sooo unique and the plot gripping so i did find this ultimately enjoyable.

All things have a value. Sometimes the value is paid in coin. Other times, it is paid in time and sweat. And finally, sometimes it is paid in blood. Humanity seems most eager to use this latter currency. And we never note how much of it we’re spending, unless it happens to be our own.

Foundryside has been on my TBR for quite a while and the nudge for me to finally get to it was something very silly – I pre-ordered Bennett's newest book, The Tainted Cup, this year and have since received it, but I wanted to read this trilogy first.. just because.

I knew that the world of Foundryside involved a character who could see into the "minds" of objects and that concept was what drew me in in the first place. And the magic system delivered – the idea of scriving was memorable, unique and it provided the foundation for a lot of interesting scenes.

The only law in the Commons is might, and success. Those who win are the ones who make the rules.

The cast of characters was also fun to get to know. I loved Sancia's sense of self-preservation (it shines particularly during one particular moment), the banter between Sancia and Clef, the way initial impressions of people are overturned. It was nice to discover the deeper layers of these characters, instead of just sticking to the surface level.

He’s just trying to fix the world because it’s the only way he knows to fix himself.

And the heists! I adore a fun heist book (yes, I love Six of Crows) and this one hits the spot in that regard. High stakes prizes, crazy plans, having to think on your feet, fast-paced action – Foundryside has it all. So if you're a fan of heist stories, I definitely recommend this one! And I'm looking forward to continuing the series as soon as my Libby hold for the next one comes in.

I started out really into this one. The world building is great and the world being built is an interesting one.

Where it lost me is the relationships. Everything was spelled out. The romantic interest is announced out of nowhere. I thought other reviews mentioning this were exaggerating, but they aren't. It's so sudden that I was pulled out of the story when it happened. We spend so much time in the MC's thoughts and they are never about the love interest. I don't need a lot of pining or anything dramatic, but the only person who describes the love interest as attractive is not the MC.

It was just odd.

I don't feel like I had a good sense for anyone's appearance and eventually started picturing Orso as Rick from 'Rick and Morty'.

The setting is great. The plot is interesting. The heist stuff is fun. I don't care about these characters.

I might finish the series some day, but for now, I'm not interested.
