What a sweet little book! I've kind of felt like I'm over YA as a genre recently, but this was a very enjoyable read.

The story is wholesome and uplifting, and the characters are lovable. I felt pretty neutral about the writing style, and that's a good thing, because sometimes the typical YA writing gets annoying to me and this didn't fall into that category. It has a lot of the typical YA tropes, but none of the really frustrating ones. The romance develops quite fast and I tend to prefer a slower burn, but it's still sweet and feels believable as a teen romance.

The main character being a queer Black girl is so important, we always need more of these diverse and joyful books for young readers to relate to!

There are a lot of pop culture references, which aren’t for me personally but it’s not too distracting. The story overall is really cute and nice, even though it does deal with some heavier topics. But for a book that’s about gay people, i wish the homophobie weren’t so swept under the rug. If you’re going to bring it up actually go into it instead of just a casual mention
and a suprisingly friendly town.
