That ending was BRUTAL. Well played, Phillips Gregory. Well played.

3.5 Stars

I enjoy it. I didn't expect to like it or finished it because history kinda bore me unless I like the subject. The way Phillippa Gregory wrote the book it was easy to read. I thought I would like Elizabeth Woodville but honestly I don't. She comes from the country and she expects so much out of herself. Actually most of the characters, I didn't really care for but the story is interesting. I like her daughter but that might change when I read her story.

Elizabeth Woodville acts like a child even though she is 27 and even as she age she still as childish as ever. She way to ambitious for her own good. Even at the end all she cares for is the throne and not her children. I don't like her but the history is very interesting.

In this book the author tells the tale of the York Queen though her thoughts and discourses, her version of the events that took place from her meeting the young King, Edward and becoming his bride and the mother of the future line of the house of York. I thought the author wrote a wonderful story based on historical documents and other materials available by incorporating them into a fictional work. By bringing life to the characters in this way it's much more entertaining than reading a book that focuses on the War of the Roses as a historical event.

Due to buying a house this summer, I haven't been able to burn through a number of books I've wanted. This was supposed to be an easy read. It was; I just didn't have the time to read. The book falls in step with all the other Tudor/Plantagenet books by Philippa Gregory. I was surprised this was the first one in the Cousins War series. (Well, published first anyway). I felt it didn't give as much depth to the events that I found in The Red Queen. Pacing really races when Richard gets to the throne, which hurts the book. I felt that was more dramatic than the countless fights Elizabeth has with Edward. Really wish she would have just combined all the Cousins War books into a giant book so you could keep the events in your head easier.

good for mindless reading. I dont enjoy "water godesses" or "witchcraft" in my hostorical fictions... but if you skip over those parts the book has a decent story line.

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book as of yet. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either.

The subject matter was definitely interesting. Elizabeth Woodville, as she is presented in this book, is a compelling, if not exactly likeable character. She knew what she wanted, and she fought hard to get and then keep it.

I mainly think the author's writing style and I did not get along. Things are often told and not shown, and at times that could get a little tedious. This is in part, I think, due to the use of first person for the majority of the book.

Also, I am not sure how I felt about the whole magic/witch aspect of the story. I know that both Elizabeth and her mother were accused of practicing witchcraft, but for magic to have played an actual role in the story? I just don't know.

I did like reading about the legend of Melusina, though.

I did enjoy this enough to want to check out the tv series based on this book, though

Just finished this wonderful work of historical fiction The White Queen which follows the life of Elizabeth Woodville and how she became Queen of England during the War of the Roses.

Reasons I Recommend:
1) Easy read about a woman who believes in the supernatural in her blood and marries for love as much as financial gain
2) history based on the monarchy of England, when the Tudors were still fighting for the throne
And 3) reading how brother turned on brother in the game of thrones and battle of the roses is very intriguing including the question of the famous mystery that leaves you wondering what really happened

I would probably give this book 2.5 stars, but when forced to choose, I round down instead of up. Elizabeth Rivers married King Edward of York and proceeds to lose and gain the throne over a 400 page span that does not drive the reader as well as other Gregory novels. It was still a fast, easy read, but there was not nearly as much intrigue, action and (lets just say it) sex as in previous books. Those are the elements that make these books fun. I have the second book in the series and I plan to give it a try, but I'm not expecting to be blown away.
