Yet again, Philippa Gregory brings English royal history to life with this story of the Plantagenets and the rivalry between the Houses of York and Lancaster. While I wasn't as entranced by this book as by _The Other Boleyn Girl_ (which remains my favorite so far of the novels by Gregory that I've read), I always enjoy learning about history through the dramatic way that this author gives voice to the perspective of an influential, though also maligned and mistreated, heroine. I'd like to read more books in this series.
The story of Elizabeth Woodville, daughter of Jacquetta of Luxembourg and wife of Edward IV is covered in this book.
It was hard to keep track of all the battles, changes of allegiances and numerous claimants to the throne. The family tree provided at the front of the book wasn’t helpful - it's incomplete and needed to show at least one more generation, as it ends before some of the important characters in the story were even born.
Elizabeth Woodville, was, a widow with two sons, when she married Edward and he made a lot of enemies as a result. She also sacrificed far too many lives, to stay in the marriage, depicting even at that time, the lengths that people would go to for power.

Started out strong, but became tedious about half-way through. It was just OK.
She has always been one of my favorite authors. Loved this book because, even as a student of history, I've always found the War of the Roses period of English history hard to follow. This helped clear it up tremendously.

The White Queen was an entertaining fictional account of Elizabeth Woodville but in my opinion The Lady of the Rivers was much better. Elizabeth was just not as lovable of a character as Jacquetta & Edward not as romantic as Richard. There were actually times in the later third of the book where I hated Elizabeth because of how cold she was.
Addictive book, easy digestible read. Excellent way to get into history and always love Gregory resources and notes about the history in the back of book.
