This was a super fast paced read. Philipa Gregory does a great job of making history into page-turner novels. I like the way that she adds her own historical speculations to the plot adding elements that have not been historically proven. It made the story more mysterious, enigmatic, and enjoyable. I enjoyed the fast pace. I enjoyed the romance in the first part of the novel, and I loved all the complicated history so clearly represented at the end. I really admire her ability to have made this dark period in English history intriguing and myseterious.

The White Queen is about the ambitions and the consequences of ambition centred around the Plantagenet court amid the War of the Roses. This is the first book in Gregory's Cousins War series.

I loved the touch of magic to this book which reminds you that it is a fictional novel after all. Gregory yet again explores the females and how political, ambitious, smart and strong they are in a time when men were at the height of the patriarchal society. Women who managed to manipulate their own way to achieve what they wanted were generally labelled as witches and/or found guilty of witchcraft. Because heaven forbid a woman being craftier than any man. I also loved that Gregory touches on her theory as to what happened with the Princes in the Tower.

In my honest opinion, Elizabeth Woodville was completely blinded by her own ambitions, and it was generally at the cost of others rather than herself.

I can understand how some people would consider Gregory to be rehashing what she did with the Tudor series but really Gregory can't help it if history repeats itself. I see that others have criticised how she has incorporated magic into this series as it's not historically accurate but at the end of the day, it is a piece of fiction and that is outlined in the authors note at the end of the book.

*I selected this for a Reading Challenge as a book turned into a TV show*

While I loved the time period of the book, there were too many pages on battle scenes. Whole chapter were written explaining in detail the fighting and I found it to be excessive. The story was interesting; however, and I will read the sequel when it comes out.

After reading the first book of this series “The Lady Rivers” you can clearly tell that this was written first and that one second. It does not seem coherent that in this book witchcraft is widely used and in ways that seem out of place, for example, when they summoned a storm by blowing to the wind, since in the first book witchcraft is frowned upon and something to do in secret. I don’t particularly like how they portrayed it in this one, the author goes as far as having the main character curse the king directly to him without barely any consequence, when in the first one women were killed for less.

It seems that the author filled the historical blanks with this witchcraft. Overall this book is a little bit underwhelming and it feels like the focus is only in warfare and the description of warfare and war plots.
