*sighs*
I really wanted to love this book, but it's just hard when everything revolves around Mehmed, boring Mehmed. The plot, the events. the two main characters thoughts and desires, enemies..etc. everything is just about him and he's not so great and deserving.
I might -or may not, most likely- continue the series for Radu, surprisingly I got fond of him more than his sister.

It has been a hot minute since I've read a historical fiction novel as good as this one. Intense, complicated characters who are completely enveloped in their own world... Kiersten White is truly amazing.

I actually started reading this because I was waiting for the fourth Throne of Glass book to become available through OverDrive and was extremely surprised at how well written this book is. So many books these days are compared to Game of Thrones, but this one truly comes the closest.

5/5 would read again

3.5 stars.

A fascinating and intricate story about politics, friendship, deception, betrayal, love, and suspicion. A host of complex, interesting and sometimes toxic characters who bring the story to life with their flaws and faults and strengths.

Review to come closer to publication date.

This one is tough to rate. There were things I enjoyed and other things that drove me crazy... looking at you Radu. While I understood some of Lada's decisions, they were still frustrating. The pace was slower than I expected but there was enough to keep me reading. Definitely will finish the series and see potential for some interesting thing ahead. I think I just had a different expectation than what this story meant to deliver. Glad I read this though!

DNF: 71%

This is the first book I DNF. I read 71% of the book but I couldn’t keep reading. I’m completely honest when it comes to review books. I can’t lie and I can’t push myself into reading something I’m not enjoying at all.

To be honest, I wanted to enjoy this book. When I read the synopsis I fell in love so obviously I expected to enjoy the book. The plot sounded interesting; kingdoms, wars, betrayal, love, badass main character? I was hooked. The first three or four chapters were really good and was thinking “oh yeah, this is going to be phenomenal”, but I was wrong.

I loved Lada. She was an amazing main character. You know, she was the only character I like. She was strong, badass, and had to struggle with what has to be a woman in that time. Then we have Mehmed and I didn’t liked it. He liked Lada but he didn’t showed anything and even though he’s character was an important one, he was pointless to me. Then we have Radu, Lada’s younger brother. I couldn’t hate him more. He was selfish and annoying… ugh.

As I said, the first three or four chapters were good, but then everything went down into a cliff. It started to get boring, slow, and then it was flat. It didn’t have anything good. The characters were getting more annoying and I just couldn’t stand it. Sometimes I read a chapter and when I was going to read the next chapter they were talking about a million different things that happened and I was like “when THAT happened?”. This book was slow and when I say slow, I mean REALLY SLOW. This book as suppose to have action and there was none. I must say, the writing was good, but I got lost easily.

Overall, it was boring and slow. The characters felt pointless to me and I couldn’t care less about them. I can’t say I recommend this book, because I don’t and I won’t.

3.5/5 I liked it and will continue the series as I like the characters and want to see where it goes. In saying that I don't think the characters are the most well developed and the plot wasn't as fast paced or as interesting as I wanted.

“Well, are you ready, Lada Dragwlya, daughter of the dragon?”
“Not Dragwlya,” she said. “Lada Dracul. I am no longer the daughter of the dragon.” She lifted her chin, sights set on the horizon. “I am the dragon.”

I loved this as much as I did the first time if not more.

I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped! It was an okay read that kept me somewhat entertained, but it missed the mark for me. A female Vlad the Impaler sounds so cool, but I wasn't sure I connected well with her.
