The book is very different from the movie. I never read this as a child.  But I can't imaging today's kids enjoying the original. It's clearly meant to be lighthearted and adventurous but ... there are too many weird elements that don't age well.

some sentences are beautiful and special. i’m surprised this story has such dark themes but very enjoyable and thought provoking. you are instantly hooked to the world of the story, which is one of the common features of a timeless classic.

I have never watched Disney's adaptation of Peter Pan. I starting reading this book with no clue about the story. I found it to be a bit too dark. Peter is a boy who never grows old, is anti-mothers and anti-growing up. How is this considered to be okay? Also the lost boys have to "obey" his orders, he kills them if they grow up, and he cut off Captain Hooks hand! Also the quote "Every time you breath, a grown up dies." is just wrong. I rate this two stars because of some scattered pieces of wisdom I found in the book;
“All he thinks he has a right to when he comes to you to be yours is fairness. After you have been unfair to him he will love you again, but will never afterwards be quite the same boy. No one ever gets over the first unfairness;”
“children are ever ready, when novelty knocks, to desert their dearest ones."

P.S. I did end up watching Disney's adaptation when I was half way through the book with my nieces and they loved the film.
