This book centers around Frank and his family. He has an older sister, a younger brother who stutters, his dad who is a minister and his mom. Truthfully I was hooked when I came across this quote in the book-But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder.

Immediately I'm intrigued. But I also love Krueger's character development in this story. We aren't given all the details of his time at war, but Frank's dad was going to be a hot shot attorney until the war, and then he decided to become a minister. This impacts his mom greatly, even his dad says his mother thought she was marrying a lawyer but ended up with a minister instead.

I just like the way Krueger writes, enjoyable book

It was a bit slow to start, but the characters grew on me. I loved the Faith themes.

Another fabulous recommendation by my Starbucks friend, Keith. (The first was Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, which skyrocketed to the top of my Favorite Books of All Tim list.) I couldn't put it down! I also love that it leaves you at the end with a head-full(is this a word?!) of thoughts about life and other things of the sort. It would be a perfect book club choice if that's something you're interested in!

I don't like mysteries when I know who did it very early and then have to finish the novel to make sure I'm right. That's the way this one was--the foreshadowing was very clear, which made it a slower read. I did love the setting--small town Minnesota, and the time period, 1961. The book just read odd--way too many people died in this small town during one summer, and the police force was basically non-existent. It was trying to be a Harper Lee-like novel, but didn't quite get there for me.
