I wanted to like it, but the writing was just not it for me.
Also Sans Serif font didn't help.

Took some time to process around this, but I think in the end it was just okay. The characters didn't feel as nuanced as I hoped they would be. The concept was interesting, and I liked the intergenerational conflict, but ultimately I'm not sure I'd recommend it.
I picked this up solely because I used to watch Kelsey Impicciche back when I was deep into The Sims 4 and I was absolutely shocked to discover she'd written a fantasy novel. Had to see what that was all about.
The writing is actually quite solid for a debut author. It's easy to read with some witty comments and genuinely funny remarks scattered throughout. Kelsey definitely has a voice that translates well from screen to page in that regard. What I absolutely loved was Celeste's transformation from mermaid to human. Her entire learning curve is written beautifully, watching her navigate this completely foreign world felt authentic and touching. The pacing moves along nicely too, so you're never really bored. Here's where it lost me though: I really didn't feel any chemistry between our two main characters. That connection just wasn't there for me, which is pretty crucial when romance is a part of the story. By the end, I honestly couldn't bring myself to care about the reveals or where the plot was heading. Everything felt very flat to me.
The story does feel like it could be a solid foundation for a series and I genuinely wish Kelsey the best with it. I hope this book finds its audience because I can see it working for people who connect with the characters more than I did. I'm just not sure I'll be continuing with the series, I couldn't stay invested enough to want to see what happens next.

Listened to the audiobook for Voice of the Ocean and it was done so so well and I believe its what made the story for me. My favorite part hands down when Natalie Naudus sang some of the siren songs - so beautiful andd SO GOOD!
This was my first Little Mermaid retelling and I liked where Kelsey took it. Voice of the Ocean gives us, Siren Princess meets Pirates with 'darker' emotional themes throughout the story. I really loved the FMC and the friendships that Celeste made throughout the story. While I wanted a bit more from the MMC and got confused as I felt that it ended a bit abruptly. (I thought this was a standalone at first - woops) This story was really intriguing and captivated me the whole time. I'm excited to see where the series goes and would fully recommend this to anyone who loves YA fantasy retellings, forbidden romance, emotion vs familial duty and secrets & betrayal.
Thank you Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for this ALC - reviews are all my own honest opinions.
