An excellent debut novel! The descriptions, both above and below the water, were vivid and immersive, placing me right into the story.
Only a few things pulled me out of the narrative:
First, the connection between Celeste and Raiden sometimes felt a bit forced, though for the most part it was believable and flowed well.
Second, as an ocean lover (okay, ocean obsessor), I really didn’t like how sharks were portrayed. I wish they’d been shown as the pillars of ocean ecosystem that they are, rather than fueled by rage toward anything that moves.
And finally, a personal pet peeve: the word smirk. Once is too much for me, and it certainly showed up more than once. I’m crossing my fingers that it vanishes completely in the sequel (which I will 100% be reading regardless).
For these three reasons, I’ve knocked off one star, but the story absolutely earns the remaining four. I’m already looking forward to book two!

An enticing plot with a mix of interesting characters! I appreciated the relatability of Celeste and her emotions, and how she chose to accept rather than hide them. It gave a strong and powerful message to those who have the same "sensitivity" as the mermaid and those who go through the same beration as she does. The story is a nice retelling, but also does very well as it's own story, as I think every retelling should be. I'm not a super mega fan of The Little Mermaid, but I was still able to enjoy the story, even if I didn't connect with all the hidden easter eggs from the original story. Overall fun read and looking forward to the sequel!

Not sure if I'm just not in the mood or if this book is not for me but the vibes are all wrong right now.

It feels more like a fanfic of the Little Mermaid than an actual original story.
