(spoiler free)
a retelling of the little mermaid, this book starts out very similar, where Celeste (siren, not mermaid) visits a siren sea witch to turn into a human so she can find the man she finds cute on land.
I do think the author is talented, however I think this book could have gone through one more small editing pass, as I will discuss below. there is an instance where Celeste and Raidan's legs will be touching and in the next moment he is walking towards her. there is another scene where it's daytime and a few minutes later it's night.
the middle of the book is a bit boring and not much happens, it just shows how Celeste is bonding with the humans around her. I also do not find Celeste to be the best main character. in the beginning and middle of the book she is really annoying, but near the end I started to like her a bit more when she started accepting herself and physically fighting for what she wants. Celeste is constantly doing the opposite of her thoughts and then crying about it and then she gets angry when people ask if she's okay LOL like duh you're crying all the time. like we get it, she's emotional, but holy shit the author really loves to beat you over the head with it. EMOTION! EMOTION! she's not like the other girls!!!! I lost track of the amount of times she cries in this book. I guess the cover makes sense 😂 throughout the book she has a love hate relationship with Raidan. she finds him cute enough to betray her own people, only when she rescues him, she suddenly hates him. then she falls in love with him, then he's an asshole and she hates him again.
I also didn't like the choice the author made about why Celeste loses her voice. the book literally went like this: "how come you were pretending you couldn't speak?" "I didn't want you to hear my accent" LOL the way I burst out laughing. the author changed quite a bit of the plot from the original Little Mermaid, but this choice for the MC to stop speaking because she doesn't want the humans to hear her siren accent is laughable. humans and sirens have not had any contact besides death, so no one should know what a siren accent sounds like, so it shouldn't matter.
also the end of the book had me like huh??? in the beginning the sirens banish Celeste for not going with their plan of killing the prince. she either has to kill him, or they will kill her. after months of spending time with humans, she finally meets back up with her siren clan at the end of the book and not only is the prince still alive, she is friends with his entire crew, DESPITE the fact that he betrayed her. and the other sirens are like "hmm ok we will help you and your human friends out." like all of the sudden they are ok with him not being dead and following her orders because she is a princess (they never did that before) and I guess the whole thing about killing her if she doesn't kill him was tossed out the window. 😵💫 the sirens go from hating humans to working with them way too quickly and out of damn nowhere.
4/5 because I still enjoyed it hehe it was a fun read

A pretty straight forward little mermaid retelling for the first maybe 25%, and then things take their own path.
Kelsey did a great job creating a strong female character who also felt intense emotions, even when she didn't want to. As someone who cries a lot.. it was relatable lol
Overall I enjoyed the FMC's journey told here. It kind of fell off for me from about 50% to 75% and then picked back up again till the end.
I'm not super excited about the ending being a cliffhanger, I typically wait till a series is finished to read it but this was still worth the read now.

Fun, entertaining read. A bit of a cliffhanger ending. A beautiful world is built and I cannot wait for the next book.
