I really enjoyed the familiarity of the story as it started mirroring the classic tale. It made it easy to get into the plot. I also enjoyed how from the start, while familiar, the story was unique and could stand on it's own.
I enjoyed seeing this story from the perspective of Celeste, because it was almost like the audience was exposed to her inner thoughts and her anxiety. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and I felt for her, especially as she struggled with the inner conflict of "I have this feeling. I hate this feeling. I don't want this. " As someone who also gets taken by emotion, she was a very fresh, believable character.
At times the dialog between two characters was a bit awkward, but the extensive details surrounding Celeste's perspective made up for it.I was curious how a story where the main character doesn’t talk was going to go, and I really enjoyed how it was done. This was truly the inner monologue of an anxious queen, and I am not sure if I had read another character like that before.
The ending I felt was fast paced, and I wanted more time with the lore that was being created. I hope that in the second novel, this lore is more established and clarified. The rest of the story I felt was fitting and well paced.
The characters were all lovable, and it is hard to pick a favorite amongst the crew.I absolutely loved Torben and Nasir. Any time there was an action scene, I was always looking for confirmation that they were okay. Their love was absolutely adorable and made me smile so much. May no harm EVER come to either of them!
Bastian's betrayal I felt hurt the worst. With Raiden, you expect it but you also see his guilt and conflict, however when the betrayal was revealed, Bastian exposed that he never trusted her. That was wild. He is on my list.
The pirates were not really that cutthroat, which was a little off-putting, but that makes sense since the story revolves around a found family, and how Celeste sees all of the vulnerable human emotions and find strengths within that, as opposed to what she was told humans were.
In terms of twists, I was knew one was coming as that was advertised, but they kept coming. I was expecting a lover's betrayal, but the true twist in my opinion was Sephone's role in the story. Her showing up at the end nearly had my jaw dropping. I loved that.
I am not one for romance, however this book definitely had me smiling at times. The true focus of the story was the adventure and the relationships with all of the crew, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This was more than just an enemies to lovers novel, I am looking forward to the continuation of this story.

Good. Fantasy retelling of the little mermaid. It does start with a very close rendition of the Disney version of the story but once you get past that the story really comes into itself. The middle section is full of filler though as most of the action is squeezed into the last couple of chapters but for a debut novel it's got potential. Can't wait to see how this story progresses as the ending is left open for another book.

I hate when I read a book thinking that it's a stand alone and then it turns out it's going to be a part of a series.
Also, it felt like it went on forever. So much unnecessary exposition. So little chemistry in the romance.

A sweet swashbuckling tale with found family and lovable characters.
It’s a retelling of the little mermaid with not much originality sorry :(
