I will always be impressed with how unique fairytale retellings can be. There’s a reason these simple stories have persisted for so long and those strengths are shown in Voice of the Ocean.
It’s The Little Mermaid but you add a bit of piracy here, cut out the memory loss, change some world building over there, and suddenly it’s a brand new story.
I was in a gigantic reading slump this entire month but this got me out of it. I stayed up until 1 in the morning reading it then stayed in bed the next day until 1 in the afternoon to finish it. It’s just so well plotted. Each chapter ends on a note that makes you want to immediately begin the next one. Celeste was known to the reader in a way that she did not know herself but it was never annoying. She hated senseless violence, hated showing emotion, tried to convince herself many times that humans meant nothing to her. Meanwhile, she keeps telling herself that she can be a good siren who will go through with her mission, dooming all the humans she’s come to care about. Sure, girl. I believe you.
Raiden- what a good enemy for an enemies to lovers trope. He and Celeste have reason to hate each other, not only on communal level of their people constantly fighting, but the personal history of their family members killing each other. And!! They’re enemies but he’s not pointlessly mean to her! He’s cautious, he’s withholding, but he’s not dumping her in the brig immediately. They’re enemies in a way that lends to angst and drama and inevitable betrayal and isn’t that just great and romantic?

i mean for a debut, YA novel this was amazin <3
some of you bitches, take notes, because the writing, overall plot and characters were really really great. also that one fan art by frostbite.studios (look it up) is. to. die. for.
that being saiiiid...
It starts off WAYY too similar to the little mermaid. I love the... twist that's revealed around the 50% mark and maybe i'm just dumb for not predicting it but i wish it was alluded to way earlier. I feel like this would have made it way more humorous and clear to the reader that its not just the little mermaid copied... word for word.
I don't think I've ever read in the POV of a character that didn't speak but I found that dynamic to be really fun and enjoyable... until... she did speak... and one of the first things she says is a cringey middle schooler come back
