if you went into this book without knowing much about it, you could tell from chapter 1 that it’s a Little Mermaid retelling. take that as you will. for me, the beginning felt like a complete rewrite of the original story/disney movie, and didn’t really become anything unique or original until much later. even then, it was just tropes we’ve seen in a thousand other recent romantasy books.
celeste not talking for the entire book felt less like it made sense for the plot and more like “well, ariel lost her voice and i thought that dynamic was cute so im going to have my fmc not speak even tho she still has her voice”
i at least thought the romance was alright. they had their cute moments, but it didn’t make sense to me that raiden knew she was a siren and *barely* questioned her on that or why she’s here as a human now. he just immediately recruited her to his pirate crew even though he knows absolutely nothing about her and she has no skills. actually, i did like that she was their navigator because she knew the waters — that made sense.
the rest of the crew… i think they were supposed to give “found family” but honestly they were kinda forgettable. i don’t even remember the names, but i do remember liking the girl and one guy 🤷♀️

I loved Celeste as a character! It was refreshing reading about a sensitive FMC in a fantasy novel.
This was like bad Little Mermaid fan fiction. Wouldn’t have finished it except it helped me fill in a square on my summer romance bingo board. Don’t recommend reading it!

I really wish it got going sooner. Celeste, the FMC, is quite annoying. I liked the other characters much better. Hopeing book 2 is better! Curious enough to find out how it ends!
