4.5? they really got me in the end.
I never thought I would enjoy a story like this, that is so character driven, but I was really drawn into Angrboda. Her connection with her children and their varying dynamics (because of their...situations) were so interesting to read. In all honesty, I needed more of that. I deducted .5 stars because part two felt lackluster to me. I know why it was happening, but at the same time, I couldn't stop questioning why it was happening. Anyway, this made me so excited to find other books that explore mythology, as I know so little about it.

Spoiler
I was sobbing like a baby when Jormungand said "Mama" and the way he leaned in to her touch because he had been so alone in the ocean all that time? literally I fear I'd rather you rip my heart out than force me to read that again.

Not so sure what to make of this one. The first half bored me enough that I seriously considered DNFing the book more than once; there was very little in the way of a plot except "Loki comes and goes as he pleases and Angrboda has babies", and that just wasn't interesting enough to me to sustain an entire novel. I understand that it was necessary setup for the second half of the book, where the children each become extremely important in their own way, but it just felt like it DRAGGED. The second half was much better and more interesting, but still I can't say that it really enraptured me or captured my imagination. I'm glad I didn't DNF it—if nothing else, it was a fascinating introduction to some key stories from Norse mythology which I wasn't familiar with (although, frustratingly, most of these stories take place off-page, and are relayed to other characters through summarized dialogue—which didn't help at all with the feeling of boring non-substance in the first half)—but I can't say that I loved it, either.

I immediatly got hung on the book. Loved how she brought the tellings, tales and figures of the norse mythology to life and showed us Angrbodas unique view.
so good, loved the narrative voice. i did wish there was slightly more revenge for those who deserved it, but that could just me being bitter. the writing was deliciously descriptive and the author made the mythology easy to understand, a huge help when norse mythos and names are definitely not my specialty. definitely recommend for readers who loved circe by madeline miller, they are very similar, but different enough that they’re both worth reading.
