I loved the different perspectives and getting a glimpse of what people most likely felt as the generation after slavery. Also love a messy and complicated love story

This was a solid story. My only critique would be I wished we would've gotten John's side of everything, or at least have Ruby ask him did he want her or Amy-Rose. Because it seemed he only liked Ruby when she was around Harrison, but at the same time he's kissing Amy-Rose, so I needed some more depth with that.

It's hard to categorize this book. It's giving Little Women vibes, and also The Notebook. Each sister is interesting and worth her own story. It highlights stories of Black people. There's activism. There's first love. There's rebellion. It's a real delight, and I can't wait for more.

It was fun to see a fully black cast of characters in a fabulously rich people setting, something i personally don’t see often in books! It was a fun, but kind of underwhelming read

This was a fun read with historical facts intertwined. I like that I didn't have to suspend belief to see Black relationships or success in a time and place where they "may" not have been.
There wasn't much forward momentum on the plot of the siblings taking charge of their lives and it ends on positive note but their goals aren't quite met. I will definitely be reading the next book.

This was a tough one to get through and I won't be reaching for the second book, at least anytime soon.

I was drawn to the book by the cover and centering story of a wealthy Black family in a historical setting, but the storylines were just too drawn out. Commotion that happened at the very end, I wish happened earlier so we could've had some more active story during the book. I can understand drawing it out for a multi-series story, but it was just kind of a lot of "nothing" happening for 200+ pages. This was perhaps too YA + slow for me.
