This is one of my favorites! Alice does a phenomenal job exploring the reality of living with a disability and being a disability activist in a way that is bold, inspiring, and most importantly not catered for an ableist audience.

Library - Paperback
Many stories provoked moments of empathy, compassion and shock that changed my persecutive on disability.  Right from the start Alice Wong addresses that activism is not an option when you are disabled.  whether it is in moments of personal advocacy or for larger protest for governmental laws.  It points out how ableist out environment is built.

What is surreal to see is your life documented as a time sheet for those who need government assistance.  In addition to the fact you need to prove over and over you struggle with a disability.
Moments of feminine care were even included and it gives a moment of how vulnerable and exposed you are to be with a person that you hope to feel safe and comfortable with.
It can be viewed as a reminder and or as your normal.  I imagine that one’s sense oof time is throw off too, by the miles stones or even the expectation of living a fast life in America is an another reminder.

I was introduced to only one’s perspective and there are many moments where she mentioned internal ablism and I never saw it as that until it was pointed out.

A another part of the book highlighted how many people really benefit from medicare and are not leaches but really need that care.  There are people who need the care but also can be very capable of obtaining a job, however, in the eyes of the insurance both cannot happen.

This was an amazing book by disabled oracle Alice Wong. A must read especially for people without disabilities. Wong questions why most books published by disabled authors are memoirs - is it because they are only profitable when they put their traumas on display? So, this book is not solely a memoir, and it will make you reflect, laugh, and cry. Especially if you are Chinese-American like me.

The organization and writing of this book wasn't my favorite, and it definitely was less memoir than a book on activism issues. It was honestly not that personal, even though other reviews have said it is.
I don't love transcribed interviews. But there were parts of the book that I really did like (the parts about her own life and experience) and it does bring up some topics that are important to consider.

Fun side note I checked out this book bc someone I follow here on storygraph read it, and I saw the title and thought "Cool! I'm a tiger too!"
