Really interesting to learn the behind the scenes of United States Politics. Obama is also a great author.

It’s fairly good, very detailed so it really allows you to imagine what it’s like being the POTUS and it gives a really wide perspective of the complexity that comes with such a great responsibility. Definitely excited to read the follow up.

With this book, Obama cements his legacy as a guy who won't shut up.

In all seriousness, I thought this a thorough examination of his own thoughts and thought processes as he held the most complicated office on the planet. He explains his reasoning and rationale for several of his larger administrative policies, and you get to see how the sausage is made. He does an excellent job of elucidating the complexities of every decision that comes to his desk, and it's delivered by a president who (unlike his successor) has a tremendous capacity for creativity, nuance, and precision. (Not to mention, vocabulary--he really has the "best words")

I could have done with a lot fewer pages of "...a junior staffer with an infectious laugh and can-do attitude" or "the dappled sunlight on the colonnade" language, but then again, that all comes from someone who took the time, despite the pressure of the job, to appreciate the small things. Looking forward to part 2.

A thorough history of the early years of Obama’s entry into politics and his Presidency. As Obama himself notes, he is “wordy” and sometimes the narrative feels heavy with policy decisions and explanations. My favorite parts of the book are the personal stories about his mother and grandmother and of course, about his wife and their daughters. The last chapter of the book, which details the events around the mission to neutralize Osama bin Laden, is exceptional.

There’s some very interesting tidbits in here, but I was honestly bored - too much political mumbo-jumbo for me. There’s some really great information I didn’t know about Obama’s early life, and I liked that part of the book a lot. I was hoping for at least a chapter on Trump and other more current ongoing.
