”‘Some of the greatest criminals I have known had the faces of angels,’ remarked Poirot cheerfully. ‘A malformation of the grey cells may coincide quite easily with the face of a Madonna.’” Poirot is on the case! Poirot and Hastings get a letter from a Mr. Renaud, requesting help, but when they arrive he’s found stabbed and left in an open grave on a golf course. His wife says masked men broke in and tied her up. There are a lot of theories about what could have happened — apparently Renaud changed his will before he died to leave all of his money to his wife, who Poirot thinks did not kill him because she fainted when she saw his body and it was real, but thinks she’s lying about something. Renaud’s son returns — he was supposed to go on a trip but didn’t — and we learn he wants to marry the daughter of a woman who may have been Renaud’s mistress. Meanwhile, Hastings is a dummy because he takes this pretty girl — nicknamed Cinderella — to look at evidence because she’s interested and the murder weapon goes missing because of his negligence. Poirot travels to Paris because he thinks he can learn something about the mystery there, and while he’s always a second murder occurs. Poirot returns and tells Hastings about what he was researching: a similar murder that happened years ago. And the wife of the victim in that murder is one and the same the neighbor of this new victim. It appears to Hastings that perhaps Madame Daubrueil is also the murderer in this case, but Poirot announces that it’s not so simple. Jack, the son, is arrested by police because they believe he wanted his dad’s money, even though it’s revealed he wasn’t even in the will. A stage performer named Bella steps forward and says that she was the one who killed him — she and Jack appeared at the body at the same time, each believing the other killed Mr. Renaud. She looks like Hastings’ Cinderella, but she loves Jack. But Poirot reveals the true murderer is Marthe Daubreuil, Mme Daubreuil’s daughter. Mr. Renaud is actually the man from the old murder — the one who conducted the killing, and when he found out that Mme D was next door, he want to escape from her because she was blackmailing him. He gets extra mad when he finds out Jack likes Marthe. So he plans to fake his death when a beggar dies on his grounds. But Marthe found out and stabbed him while he was digging the grave for the tramp, which is why he was found near a grave — that was a big part of the mystery. But to prove this, Poirot tells Mrs Renaud to denounce her son and sure enough when she does this Marthe comes to kill her. But Marthe dies when she runs into Cinderella, who was there to help Poirot and Hastings. They now prove that Marthe was the murderer. Mrs Renaud and Jack go to South America while Mme D disappears. Hastings finds out that his Cinderella is actually Bella’s twin and so the two of them strike something up, but I feel like I don’t remember from any of the other Poirot novels I’ve read so I really don’t know how long she’s around. This isn’t my favorite Poirot story — it was at times a bit slow toward the middle — but I did like how, once again, you never really know where the story is going to turn. You think you might know who the murderer is but then you get a new piece of evidence that completely upturns what you think, like the introduction of the twins and this other murder that occurs. AC is really good at picking the best times in her stories to drop new pieces of evidence. Because of that, I did enjoy this book!
