A really wonderful,  if at times heavy handed story about stories and how women are lessened by the lack of representation.

I felt the middle dragged quite a bit and there were lots of complex politics which I didn't really care about - in the end it was all recapped anyway so it didn't feel so bad that I'd not paid loads of attention. I would have loved to see more of Hester and Devon's relationship developing as that felt like it happened kind of quickly.

also the bit st the end with the bag REALLY made me eye roll!

Overall a decent read!

I’ll admit that I just don’t like dark gothic stories. If you do, maybe give this interesting spin on a vampire story a try. The book eaters and mind eaters concept kept me intrigued enough, and the out of order storytelling was interesting. Check content warnings before diving in.

I’m so fortunate that A) this book exists, B) I added it to my TBR, and C) I got to read it. I don’t even remember how this ended up on my TBR, but I’m glad I did. This story is slow, layered, and beautifully written

This book was much paced much slower than my usual reads. Even though I didn’t read it straight through because of the pacing, I loved every minute I was reading.

Incredible, flawed, queer anti protagonist & her “monster” child who I could not help but adore.

i got into this expecting to read a story about a mother who moved mountains for her child. i kinda got that, but i also got way too many pages of men trying to oppress women/mothers by using their children against them & ugh. i wish i'd read some cws first bc while it wasn't actually triggering for me i found all these sect-/cult-like tendencies to be vERY uncomfortable and unsettling.
the whole "love doesn't have rules or a cost & also isn't necessarily good all the time" was a cool touch tho.

An early contender as my favorite read of 2023! Imaginative, complex, brilliant storytelling. I hope there's more to come.
