Started off a moderate pace but jumped to 100 so fast. The twists, the turns, the chemistry. I loved it

This was my first Ali Hazelwood and it was…fine. Misery was kind of unbearable, so the whole thing being from her POV wasn’t my favorite. The world was fun and I did like the side characters but I also had a hard time believing in the romance on his end. I know it was a
fated mates
situation, but that wasn’t enough to keep me rooting for them.

I truly loved this novel! Well written and witty, with a real plot that doesn't get forgotten or pushed aside for more spice. The spiciness doesn't even really simmer until closer to halfway through the book, which suited me just fine! I am desperately hoping there is a book 2, or at least a book about a certain set of side characters! I do wish that the spice had come a bit sooner, and I can't say I loved everything Lowe said - but that's simply a personal preference.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I mainly borrowed it for the novelty of seeing a high profile romance author tackling werewolf romance and knotting kink, but found myself loving the relationship development and comedic dialogue, as well as getting engrossed in the mystery plot. There was very little I took issue with - although one thing I took issue with, I did a lot, which I'll elaborate in the next paragraph. My intuition with plot twists was split in success - some things I guessed in the right direction or outright was expecting, but there were times when the book genuinely shocked me. That mix made for a pleasant experience - nothing nonsensical for the sake of getting one over the audience cheaply while not being too cliche to the point of boredom.

However, there is a development in the third act that soured me and is the reason my rating is a firm 4 instead of a 4.X. I wouldn't have minded the usage of the "third-act breakup" trope if the trigger for it had made sense or at the very least wasn't too annoying, but the execution in this story was perhaps the worst form of it. It wasn't just annoying, it almost outright killed the romance for me, and I still haven't fully accepted the reasoning and apologies given at the end by the love interest - especially as the "reconciliation" conversation included instances of the love interest trying to make decisions for the protagonist and believing he knows her feelings better than she herself, which I hate in romances. The third-act emotional betrayal from the love interest is the reason for me listing "gaslighting" under one of the content warnings.

Other than that, I am a bit confused by the end of epilogue. I'm aware a bombshell was dropped, but I haven't actually fully pieced together what it was. I'm not sure if it intended to set up a sequel, but regardless I think a continuation is in order just to explore where it left off.

There were parts that I liked about the world building, though it could have used more depth and then there was the plot which I thought was rather predictable.  It was first and foremost a romance but at times it tried to be a mystery and so it felt a bit choppy and displaced at times.  It was fine.

I loved this book! It was a little hard to follow in the beginning - trying to figure out who was talking/thinking; there is a weird use of pronouns (1st versus 3rd person) throughout the book. The story line was fun, a bit of a mystery, and a it had a good ending. Very spicy - written well. Kind of like a very grown up Twilight, except just vampires and werewolves (almost no humans). The romance part of the story builds and is primary to all the subplots. The characters have good arcs. Overall, a fun, spicy, paranormal romance.
