The character development in this book is so good. You really get to know them. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. It kept me engaged and I had a hard time putting the book down.

Told from the POV of the residents of 33 Place Brugmann, Alice Austen does such a lovely job of telling the story of life in a Brussels building in the early years of WWII.

I appreciate that Austen trusts the reader to deduce what’s going on since she doesn’t always explicitly tells us. Instead, she drops bread crumbs from each of the POVs, leaving the reader to fully form the narrative.

It’s refreshing that not all the occupants are likable; not all are on the right side. Even so, what shines the most are the themes of love and community.

I can see myself picking this book up again and again!

DID NOT FINISH: 21%

Stopping this unfortunately for the same reasons as the physical. Great narration but just don’t really see this going anywhere of interest to me.

For those who appreciate excellent character development, this book may be of interest. The premise of the storyline initially sparked considerable excitement, and the beginning of the novel proved to be quite captivating. Nevertheless, as the narrative progressed, a lack of continuity occasionally made it challenging to follow the characters, despite the initial fascination. The writing style has led to a rating of three stars.
