it's just massive. truly a tome. don't know if I prefer it to Homer? I really enjoy the repetitive rhythms of Greek oral epic and I found Milton's verse impressively constructed but opaque to a reader such as myself (not hugely gifted with 17th century smarts and biblical knowledge)
I think I probably on a first reading missed many a key reference but you really get a sense for the enormity of Milton's concept of world and space in this. I got a true sense of eternity in how he constructs heaven hell and earth.
I struggled somewhat with the pacing and lack of punctuation but I am very glad to have read this, though unfortunately feel like I had a very superficial first reading as I KNOW what has happened but cannot see the clear links to academic readings of the characters as of yet. can't wait to have my own opinion of Satan and God.
books 9- 11 were probably my favourite
this being said I thought the image of the injured and bleeding Satan in the tale of the celestial war recounted by Raphael in book 5 was striking in it's beauty
