Yikes. This is Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca meets Stephen King's The Shining. 

Winifred Notty is the new governess to the Pounds family, but she comes to their remote Gothic home with a host of secrets and a "Darkness" that lives within her. And dark it is. There were a few moments in this book where I thought "WTF am I reading?" 

While some of Winifred's actions and thoughts are shocking, it's also loaded with dark humor. Tons of foreshadowing, and even an outright reveal of how things are going to go fairly early in the book does not detract from the tension or sense of impending doom. It's all about HOW it's going to happen. 

3.75 stars because this story requires a lot of suspension of disbelief to work. But if you like a good mix of dark humor and horror, this is the book for you.

As darkly grotesque as it is darkly funny, it makes a change to see a character so resolved in their unlikeability.

Honestly I’m not typically a horror book person but I like to try it every now and then. In a few words this book is grotesque, gore filled, and hilarious. You know you shouldn’t root for certain characters but can’t help it. I saw they are apparently making this a movie and I’m going to have to see what they actually can produce.
