That Boy

Whew. That was... something. It was like a Junie B. Jones book grew up (slightly) and tried to be a romance but still couldn't talk about boy parts and girl parts and the love hug parents do to make baby people.

What the actual fuck was this book even?

So a couple of days ago I got stuck for a few hours in a place without a book. No problemo I'll just go see what looks good and free in prime reading. Obviously nothing but this had eleventy million good reviews on Amazon. Eleventy. Million.

WTF Amazon users.

I would have given up on this at the halfway point but today I again found myself in a waiting room for hours with only an issue Sports Illustrated from 2007 and this book on my phone.

I should have read the magazine. Repeatedly.

I hate everyone and everything in this book. Except the world building because there was none. There was dialogue and inner monologue and absolutely not one shred of setting.

This book reads like it was written by a 12 year old. But, obviously I'm going to have to finish the series. *sigh*

Anybody up for a game of SF???

To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to like this. I thought it was going to be too YA for me. Somehow, someway, this book touched my heart. I was crying like a baby, my heart oozed with such joy, my "awed" out loud, I fist pumped, and I was smiling like a crackhead.

Nothing is better than having 2 guy friends that will do anything for you when you are a girl. I absolutely loved how protective Danny and Phillip were of JJ and "rescued" her when she needed. Basically all 3 kids had 3 sets of parents and my heart swelled at the love. For your parents to accept your friends like that and treat them as one of your own is amazing. I also thought it was awesome when the boys girlfriends wouldn't really care for their relationship with JJ and the guys would dump the girlfriend and vice versa. It's like no brainer, don't like my BFF? Goodbye.

This story portrayed JJ's life in chronological order from early age (preschool/Kindergarten) until after college.

Like I said, I wasn't sure I would like this, but I loved it. It was so cute and the writing style was something different.

Now, onto That Wedding :)

Parents in the hot tub! LOVED IT!!!!

I found it in my kindle library. Actually really enjoyed the longer chronological narrative.

I adored both boys and the friendships. I did not adore the big trauma. I guess books would be boring without some drama, but damn!

TikTok ads worked… but it was not good

WHAT THE HECK DID I JUST LISTEN TO?

Where to start?...with the whiney one dimensional main character? or with the plot that jumps around like crazy giving the bare minimum of details about significant events while prattling on for paragraphs whenever the main character went off on one of her MANY "tangents"

Honestly reading this book was like being shoved inside the head of the most fake, overly stereotypical, blonde ditz you can imagine! She seemed like the type of person who would be fascinated to find that if she left a block of ice in the heat it would become a puddle.

What could possibly make this worse you may ask? Having the audiobook narrated by someone who sounds like an extra whiney version of your 10 year old sister. The narration (helped along by the often juvenile choice of language for this supposed college graduate character) made her sound like a spoilt little brat who just had her toys taken away from her, both at 10 and at 22.

I finished this book out of curiosity to see if it had any redeeming qualities, but honestly couldn't take anymore of the narrator's whiney voice. Now that I have finished the book....I can't say I gained anything from the experience, though being stuck inside that main characters head I may have sadly lost a few brain cells and IQ points.

if you've read this far and are curiously wondering if you can handle reading this book (particularly the audiobook) first imagine every "dumb blonde" character type from every cheesy teen movie, rolled into one character with their most annoying traits amplified and ask yourself if you want to spend 200 something pages trapped inside their head.
