“Only One Survives” was not only a thriller, but a hard look at friendship, family, deceit, and the downfalls/realities of fame. I didn’t guess the twists in this book, and I loved being on the edge of my seat as the truths started coming to light. I loved the play on words for both band names - EmVee and Bittersweet were legit the most perfect names for everything that happened in this book. No spoilers, but I’m still not sure if I should be #TeamVienna or #TeamMadison, but I can tell you without a doubt that I’m #TeamHannahMaryMcKinnon.

Just when you think you have it figured out, another twist! Really great read with a great plot.

This book was like a mash up of Daisy Jones and the Six by TJR and Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates.

Two high school best friends, Vienna and Madison, form a dummer/guitar duo called EmVee. They graduate, the duo falls apart. Vienna stays in Portland Maine because she can’t bear to leave her ailing Grandmother who lives with her, her Mom and her Mom’s boyfriend. Vienna has a really toxic and rough relationship with her drunk mother and her boyfriend and after her Grandmother passes away she gets the hell out of dodge, moving to NYC where Madison is currently living and eventually the pair decide to create a band and add three more women to the group and rebrand themselves as The Bittersweet.

The group starts to see some traction with the release of their song Sweetspot. Just before Christmas they are headed to a smooze party in the Catskills, the weather is not good and a snowstorm quickly envelopes the area, the women plus a documentarian who’s travelling with them go off the road. One of the members dies on impact and another is very badly injured.

Things just get worse from here, other members die and there’s questions surrounding if one of them is a killer.

This book had potential to be really, really good but at 400 pages it was just too long and wordy and the pacing starts to drag. And I did guess the ending – the clues were blatant for me – stuck out like a sore thumb.

If you’ve read this one, I’m curious what your thoughts are?

Thank you @goodreads for my win copy!

I honestly wish I hadn’t waited as long as I did to read this. I was hesitant when I first started. I put it down and now I wish I had kept with it because when it got good it kept getting better! There was so many twists in this book that kept my jaw dropping!

This book follows two high school best friends- Vienna who is a drummer and Madison- who plays guitar and sings. It is such an unlikely friendship. Things go from interesting to thrilling! You definitely will not regret picking this book up.

Droll. Annoying. Plot holes everywhere. Don’t know why I forced myself to finish this shit.
